MARQUETTE GAME TONIGHT IS CANCELED — Lack of numbers have plagued the Metro East Lutheran Knight football program all season and it has struck again, causing MELHS to forfeit its contest against the Marquette Catholic Explorers tonight.
Metro and Marquette were set to square off at 7 p.m. for the Knights' Senior Night before they had to cancel on Wednesday. The Explorers scrambled to pick up another game, but with such short notice none were available.
The forfeit victory moves Marquette to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the Prairie State Conference. The Knights plummet to 0-8 and have now forfeit three games.
ALTON FALLS TO COLLINSVILLE IN OT — The Alton Redbirds lost a tough one Thursday night, falling to Collinsville 2-1 in overtime on the road.
Alton dipped to 11-6-3 on the season and 2-4 in the Southwestern Conference. The Kahoks improved to 10-9-1 and 4-2 in league action. The match closed out the regular season for both teams.
The Redbirds received their lone goal from Eric Ferenbach who was assisted by Alex Piazza. Shane Bollini handled the duties in the goal for AHS.
Alton now enters the Class 3A Edwardsville Regional as the No. 3 seed. It plays Quincy at 7 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the District 7 Sports Complex in Edwardsville.
ROXANA CHARGES PAST PIASA BIRDS IN THREE — Roxana picked up a 24-26, 26-24, 25-13 win over Southwestern on Thursday at home.
The win lifted the Shells to 18-10 overall on the season.
Bailey McGuire had nine kills to lead Roxana, while Maddy Sheraka chipped in with six kills and nine digs, Deb Bethel had 13 assists and Erica Sheets produced six kills and one block.
The Shells are back in action at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 playing host to Metro East Lutheran.
MARQUETTE LOSES TO NOKOMIS ON THE ROAD — The Marquette Catholic Explorers stumbled Thursday in Nokomis, losing to the Redskins 25-17, 25-9 in Prairie State Conference action.
The loss dropped the Explorers to 9-14 overall and 1-4 in the PSC.
Brittany Pace and Taylor Rook led Marquette with three kills apiece, Rachel Pohlman had nine assists and Kalie Buecker and Caitlyn Hanlon each recorded four digs. Rook also had an ace, while Pace put up five blocks, one solo and four assisted.
Next up for the Explorers is Madison at 6 p.m. on Oct. 23 at home.
BUNKER HILL SWEEPS EA-WR — The Bunker Hill Minutemaids visited East Alton-Wood River Thursday and came away with a 26-24, 25-18 sweep.
EA-WR now enters the Jersey Tournament at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
CIVIC MEMORIAL FALLS AT HIGHLAND — The Civic Memorial Eagles had a tough go of it in Highland on Thursday, losing in straight games 25-9, 25-7 to the host Bulldogs.
The loss sank CM to 5-16 overall on the season and 0-8 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
The Eagles are back in action at the Freeburg Tournament beginning today.
