EAGLES BOW TO MASCOUTAH IN MVC -- It’s back to volleyball business Thursday for the Civic Memorial Eagles.
They welcome Jersey in their final Mississippi Valley Conference match at 6 p.m. CM fell at Mascoutah, 25-14, 25-20 in a Valley match Tuesday. The Eagles dropped to 5-21 overall and remain winless in the MVC.
Jersey is 15-12 overall and 1-8 in the conference, with the Panthers’ lone league win coming against the Eagles.
Susan Buchanan had six kills and four assisted blocks for the Eagles in their road loss to the Indians. Annika Ochs supplied five service points and six digs. Monica Ledesma contributed six assists, while Sydney Marshall had five assists and four assisted blocks. Alaina Trosley provided six digs.
Following Thursday's match, the Eagles play this weekend in the Quincy Notre Dame Tournament. Competition begins Friday.
OILERS FALL – Greenville topped East Alton-Wood River, 25-17, 25-23 in nonconference action on the Comets’ court.
Next up for the Oilers is their Class 2A regional that starts Monday at Memorial Gym. EA-WR plays Marquette Catholic at 5:30 p.m. Metro East Lutheran then tangles with Gillespie at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
The Marquette-EA-WR winner faces top-seeded Staunton at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Second-seeded Southwestern meets the MELHS-Gillespie winner at 6:30 that night. The regional championship match is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30.
WEST CLINCHES SWC TIE – Belleville West clinched a portion of the Southwestern Conference by defeating host Edwardsville, 25-22 and 25-21.
The 25-9 Maroons, improved to 6-0 in the conference and can secure an outright league title with a win Thursday at Alton. If the 25-6-1 Redbirds prevail, Edwardsville and West will share the league championship. The Birds are 3-3 going into their final conference match.
The Tigers are 16-14 and finished 6-1 in the SWC.
Edwardsville will play host to a Class 4A regional next week and third-seeded Alton is playing in the five-team affair.
