ROXANA, MARQUETTE ENTRIES EARN WINS, BUT ELIMINATED AT STATE — Roxana junior Sydney Owsley led the Greater Alton area contingent at the girls' state tennis tournament.
Owsley advanced to Friday's fourth round consolation bracket before being eliminated. She finished 3-2 at state.
Marquette Catholic's Shelby Jones went 1-2 in the singles bracket, while the Explorers' doubles tandem of Elena Gable and Laura Moore also went 1-2.
Owsley prevailed 7-5, 6-2 over Elizabeth Lindqwister of Peoria Richwoods in the first round. She then fell 6-0, 6-0 to Jelena Vujanic of Elk Grove Village in Round 2 to drop into the consolation bracket.
She won 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) against Carli McGinn of Coal City and 0-6, 6-3 (10-2) over Lulu Nicks of Woodstock North to qualify for Friday's action. Owsley's state trip was halted in a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Haleigh Porter of Homewood Flossmoor in the fourth round consolation bracket. She finished with four points for the Shells.
Jones logged a 6-3, 6-0 win over Peoria Richwood's Marisa Patel-O'Connor in the first round. She then ran into a tough draw, losing 6-0, 6-0 to Eileen Carney of Joliet West in the second round and 6-0, 6-0 to Ashley Kosy of Algonquin Jacobs in second-round consolation play.
Gable and Moore also picked up a first-round triumph, besting Megan Woolverton and Lucia Lacuesta of Massac County 6-2, 6-2. The duo then lost 6-2, 6-0 to Homewood Flossmoor's Brittany Henry and Kaela Mack and 6-1, 6-0 to Maddie Matty and Michelle He of Aurora (Metea Valley).
ROXANA WINS ON SENIOR NIGHT — The Roxana Shells logged a 25-13, 18-25, 25-20 win over Gillespie in South Central Conference action on Senior Night Thursday.
The win elevated the Shells to 14-19 overall and 4-5 in the SCC.
Kara Meyer and Braeden Lackey led the way with nine kills apiece. Niah Bevolo set the offense with 13 assists, while Brittany Alexander chipped in with nine. Bevolo and Alexander both had a team-high 10 service points, too. Lackey and Taylor Westfall logged two aces apiece, while Meyer paced the defense with 15 digs. Keely Reardon added nine digs for good measure.
Next up for the Shells is Greenville at 6 p.m. Monday in the Class 3A Greenville Regional.
MARQUETTE BESTS MADISON — The Marquette Catholic Explorers raced past the Madison Trojans in two games Thursday, 25-16, 25-10.
Marquette improved to 16-10 with the victory.
Anna Daugherty and Karoline Lauritzen directed the offense with five kills apiece, while Marissa Nosco set them up with 20 assists. Nosco was key in the service game, compiling 12 service points and nine aces. Laura Hamilton guided the defense with 12 digs.
The Explorers won the match without recording a block from their dominant net game.
Marquette now prepares for the Class 2A Carlinville Regional. The third-seeded Explorers play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the winner of Carlinville and North Greene.
ALTON LOSES AT BELLEVILLE WEST — The Belleville West Maroons bested visiting Alton Thursday, 25-10, 25-15.
The loss closed the regular season for the Redbirds at 21-12-1 and 2-5 in Southwestern Conference play. The Maroons improved to 32-3 and 6-1, sharing the SWC crown with Edwardsville and O'Fallon.
AHS now enters the Class 4A Granite City Regional at 7 p.m. Monday against Chatham Glenwood.
