ALTON SWEEPS TIGERS IN SWC SHOWDOWN — The Alton Redbird bowlers broke out their brooms Wednesday at Edison Sports Complex in Edwardsville, sweeping the host Tigers in a Southwestern Conference dual.
The AHS boys' squad defeated EHS 2,894 to 2,720, while the lady Birds blasted the Tigers 2,562 to 1,853.
Matt Fritz was the catalyst for the Redbird boys, rolling a team-high 695 series. Fritz also owned the high game on the day with a 280.
On the girls' side Eryka Graham steered the Alton attack with a 677 series. Ashley Heistand produced the best game for the Redbirds, rolling a 247 in the third game of her 568 series.
There's no rest for the Birds, as they return to the lanes at 3:45 p.m. today at O'Fallon.
EA-WR DROPS PSC GAME AT MOUNT OLIVE — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers ran into a juggernaut in the Mount Olive Wildcats on the road Wednesday, losing 74-21 in Prairie State Conference action.
The Oilers sank to 2-7 overall with the loss and 0-2 in PSC action. Mount Olive, ranked No. 10 in the latest Associated Press Class 1A state poll, improved to 9-2 overall and 4-0 on the league slate.
The Wildcats raced out to a 16-5 lead after one quarter and led 40-7 at the break on their way to the conference victory. EA-WR's best quarter was the third when it was only outscored 17-12 by Mount Olive.
Courtney Beneke paced the Oilers with 10 points in the loss. Sydney Slayden pitched in 3 points and Carly Campbell, Kaitlin Goodbrake, Becca Renken and Meagan Wallendorff each netted 2 points.
Brianna Henke stirred the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points. Zoe Murphy complemented her with 14 points.
EA-WR hits the road again at 7:45 p.m. tonight, traveling to Dupo.
