ALTON STARTS SWC WITH VICTORY OVER BELLEVILLE WEST — The Alton Redbirds got off to a good start in defending their 2013 Southwestern Conference championship on Monday.
The Redbirds welcomed the Belleville West Maroons to Rolling Hills Golf Course in Godfrey Monday and promptly beat them to start the conference season 1-0. Alton carded a 173 to defeat West, which shot a 192.
Natalie Long led the way for the Redbirds, earning medalist honors with a 38. The rest of the team score rounded out with Tori Hays (41), Courtney Hachmann (44) and Samantha Patton (50).
AHS is back in action at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against the Edwardsville Tigers at Oak Brook Golf Club in Edwardsville.
ALTON DROPS CLOSE CONTEST TO E'VILLE AT LOCKHAVEN — The Alton Redbirds couldn't quite pull it out against the Edwardsville Tigers Monday on a tough Lockhaven Golf Course.
The Southwestern Conference-leading Tigers fired a 163 to squeak out a win over the Redbirds who shot a 167.
Edwardsville's Cale Ambuehl and Ben Tyrell tied for medalist honors with 40s.
Alton received 41s from Nick Jamison and Andrew Campbell to lead the charge. Phyllip DeLoach added a 42 and Alex Rubin and Mitch Klug each carded 43s to round out the scoring.
Alton is back in action at 4 p.m. Wednesday vs. Marquette Catholic at Lockhaven.
EA-WR WINS AT FIVE-TEAM FIELD — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers were able to come out on top of a five-team heap Monday at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River.
The Oilers shot a 166 to inch past Granite City and Triad which each carded a 167. Roxana (171) and West Central (178) rounded out the team scoring.
Triad's Brayden Polansky was medalist with a 36. EA-WR was led by Drew Sobol with a 39, while Roxana got a 38 from Zack Moore to lead the way for the Shells.
The Oilers are now 11-1 in dual action.
Next ahead for EA-WR is a quadrangular at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton against Staunton, Hillsboro and Lincolnwood. Roxana gets back on the links at 4 p.m. today vs. Jersey at Wolves Crossing Golf Club in Jerseyville.
MARQUETTE STYMIES SHELLS AT HOME — The Marquette Catholic Explorers played host to the Roxana Shells Monday and came away with a 9-0 win.
In singles action, Marquette got a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 win from Shelby Jones, a 6-2, 6-4 win from Laura Moore, a 6-3, 6-3 win from Elana Gable, a 6-0, 6-1 win from Adri Ventimiglia, a 7-5, 6-4 victory from Claire Snider and a 6-2, 6-1 win from Abbi Simonds.
In doubles, Jones and Gable won 6-3, 6-4, Moore and Ventimiglia prevailed 6-3, 6-0 and Snider and Simonds triumphed 6-2, 6-1.
Marquette improved to 2-1 with the win, while Roxana dropped to .500 at 3-3.
The Explorers are back on the courts at 4:30 p.m. today at Gibault. The Shells welcome East Alton-Wood River at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
