ALTON CRUISES PAST HIGHLAND — The Alton Redbirds had little issue with the Highland Bulldogs on the ice Monday at the East Alton Ice Arena, cruising to a 9-2 victory.
Alton led 3-1 after one period and 7-2 after two on its way to the lopsided win. The Birds improved to 6-5 on the season with the triumph. They are currently in fifth place in the MVCHA standings. Highland dipped to 3-8 with the loss.
Brandon Lang highlighted the Redbirds by scoring four goals on Monday. He chipped in two assists also, for a total of 10 points on the night. He scored once in the opening period, twice in the second and once more in the third.
Jacob Eppel notched a pair of goals and an assist, while Zack Hunter logged a goal and four assists, Jake Bohn had a goal and three assists, Joe Boevingloh scored a goal and Tanner St. Peters and Scotty Waldrup dished out one assist apiece.
Alton outshot Highland 29-15. Goalie Caleb Currie picked up the victory between the pipes.
Next up for the Redbirds is Granite City at 8:45 p.m. Thursday at the Ice Arena.
ROXANA EDGES SCC RIVAL CARLINVILLE — The Roxana Shells picked up a tight South Central Conference win Monday on the road, squeaking by Carlinville 45-42.
Roxana moved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the SCC with the win.
The Shells trailed 16-8 after one quarter, but clawed back to nab a 22-20 lead at the break. They fell behind 34-33 after three frames, but outscored the Cavaliers 12-8 in the fourth quarter to eke out the win.
Sophomore Hannah Rexford paced Roxana with 19 points. She led all scorers. Abby Palen, 11 points, and Sara Kreutztrager, 10 points, joined Rexford in double figures in the victory.
Roxana now delves into the Gibault Candy Cane Classic at 6 p.m. tonight vs. Windsor.
EA-WR OPENS IN GIBAULT WITH A LOSS — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers opened the Gibault Candy Cane Classic with a 74-22 loss to the Columbia Eagles.
The loss sank the Oilers to 2-9 on the season and sends them to the consolation bracket of the weeklong tournament.
Columbia, 7-2 on the season, raced out to a 27-3 after the opening quarter and never looked back.
Courtney Wellbacher was one of three Eagles in double figures, leading all scorers with 13 points.
Carly Campbell led EA-WR with 10 points. Other scorers for the Oilers were: Courtney Beneke, 6 points, Becca Renken, 4 points, and Abbie Cathey, 2 points.
EA-WR now faces host Gibault, 2-6, which lost 51-29 to Waterloo in the opening round of the tourney on Monday. That game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Columbia and Waterloo meet in the semifinals of the championship bracket at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
GRANITE CITY FALLS TO O'FALLON IN SWC PLAY — The Granite City Warriors and O'Fallon Panthers met in Southwestern Conference action on Monday with the Panthers prevailing 40-26.
The Warriors slipped to 2-4 and 1-2 in the SWC with the setback, while O'Fallon lifted its record to 5-3 and 3-1 with the victory.
Granite City now welcomes Edwardsville to Memorial Gym at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
