ALTON SKATES BY GCHS, 7-2, IN OPENER — The Alton Redbirds blasted by the Granite City Warriors on Monday at the East Alton Ice Arena in both teams' openers for the '15-16 season.
The Birds outshot the Warriors 32-15 in the game and only had 2 penalties for 4 minutes, compared to GCHS' 6 for 20 minutes.
Zack Hunter opened the scoring for Alton off assists from Jake Bohn and Tanner St. Peters off of a power play in the first period. Connor Jones tacked on an unassisted goal for AHS and Granite City's Pavol Hutchins sliced into the lead later in the period, leaving it 2-1 in favor of the Redbirds after one.
Alton had three goals in the second period. Brandon Lang scored on an assist from Hunter, Joe Boevingloh tickled the twine on a feed from Bryce Simon and St. Peters added a goal on a dish from Bohn. Adam Lloyd of the Warriors scored late in the second period, cutting it to 5-2.
Bohn logged a goal on an assist from Hunter and Lang had an unassisted goal in the third period to produce the final.
Alton is back in action vs. Edwardsville at 8:45 p.m. tonight at the East Alton Ice Arena. Granite City faces Highland at 8:15 p.m. tonight in Granite City.
EA-WR STUMBLES TO HIGHLAND IN OPENER — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers opened the '15-16 ice hockey season with a 6-2 loss to Highland on Monday at the East Alton Ice Arena.
The Oilers trailed 2-0 after the first period, but rallied to one-goal deficits twice before giving up a trio of unanswered scores in the third period.
Tyler McHatten scored the first goal for EA-WR in the second period, cutting it to 2-1. He was assisted by Kaleb Harrop and Blake Weishaupt on the goal.
The Bulldogs led 3-1 entering the third period when Cole Ford of the Oilers scored a goal to whittle it to 3-2. Ford was the co-Hockey Player of the Year for the AdVantage News last season. Highland responded with three goals late to blow it open.
EA-WR returns to the ice at 7:15 p.m. tonight against the Bethalto Eagles.
