REDBIRDS CHARGE PAST PANTHERS — The Alton Redbirds welcomed the Jersey Panthers to AHS on Tuesday and promptly beat them 8-1.
Alton improved to 3-0 on the young season with the win.
The Redbirds won five of six singles matches and swept the doubles flights against Jersey. In singles, Shannon Willis prevailed at No. 1 6-3, 6-0, Abby Fischer won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, at No. 4 Hannah Macias was the victor 6-2, 7-6, Katie Cronin won at No. 5 6-4, 6-0 and Sami Clayton prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.
Willis and Fischer played at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-1, 6-3, while McDaniel and Macias were triumphant 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and Cronin and Clayton won 6-0, 6-2.
Alton returns to action on Saturday at the Sacred Heart-Griffin Tournament in Springfield.
EXPLORERS POST SHUTOUT — Marquette Catholic started its season on a winning note by blanking visiting East Alton-Wood River, 9-0. The Oilers are 0-4.
Shelby Jones, Elena Gable, Laura Moore, Adri Ventimiglia, Abbi Siemonds and Anne Tassinari prevailed in singles matches. The Explorers’ doubles teams of Gable and Moore, Jones and Ventimiglia, plus Siemonds and Tassinari, also won.
The Explorers resume action Thursday when they welcome Mascoutah. The Oilers are at Hillsboro the same day.
MARQUETTE WINS BIG — The host Explorers, now 3-1-1, scored early and often in walloping Lebanon, 7-0. Goalies Brandon Sanfilippo and Nick Hemann teamed for eight saves to register the shutout in the nonconference match.
Zach Weinman and Chris Hartrich both scored two goals for Marquette, which converted seven of 16 shots. Weinman booted the first first goal, assisted by Chris Dunn, at just one minute into the match set the tone for the lopsided victory.
Noah Fahnestock, Tony Vitale and Kwame Ngwa also tallied. Dunn logged two assists.
Marquette resumes play in an 11 a.m. match Saturday at Althoff.
EXPLORERS TOP PANTHERS — Marquette logged a nonconference win, defeating host Litchfield, 25-18, and 25-23, in nonconference play.
Anna Daugherty (five kills), Andria Pace (four aces), Katie Gierer (17 points), Marissa Nosco (11 assists) and Michelle Cameron and Brittany Pace (three blocks) led the 3-3 Explorers.
Marquette is scheduled to play Wednesday at Civic Memorial.
SHELLS FALL TO HILTOPPERS — Visiting Hillsboro bested Roxana, 27-25 and 25-19 in South Central Conference play. The Shells, who fell to 2-3, are slated to resume league competition Thursday at Vandalia.
Niah Bevolo paced Roxana with eight assists and seven service points, while Kara Meyer hammered home four kills to lead the offense and picked up a pair of blocks. Braeden Lackey contributed with two kills and three blocks also.
EAGLES DOWN SHELLS — Alex Hilliard had the hot hand as CM beat Roxana in a dual match at the Spencer T. Olin Community Course.
Hilliard shot a 1-under par 35 as the 3-2 Eagles recorded a 165 score. Chase Spanhook added a 39. Zach Carlisle notched a team-best 38 for the Shells, who shot 201.
SHELLS WIN QUAD – Roxana recorded a 202 score to finish first in a quadrangular at the Greenville Country Club. The host Comets were second at 209, followed by Pana at 219 and Staunton at 219.
Olivia Kama of Pana was medalist with a 7-over-par 43. Bailey Sharpmack shot a 44 for the Shells and teammate Andrea Mellenthin pitched in with a 45.
The Shells are scheduled to entertain Edwardsville and Marquette on Wednesday in a triangular at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River.
GCHS GIRLS' GOLFERS IMPROVE TO 7-0 — The Warriors’ girls' golf team improved to 7-0 after beating Belleville West in its Southwestern Conference opener on Tuesday at Belleville.
The Warriors carded a 172 to outdistance the Maroons, who shot 196.
Megan Keel fired a 40 and Ashley Richey, Mallory O’Gara and McKenna Beaver each shot 44s for the Warriors, who will play O’Fallon on Wednesday at Legacy Golf Course.
