REDBIRDS TOP GRANITE CITY, 8-1 — The Alton Redbirds welcomed the Granite City Warriors to AHS on Thursday, winning a Southwestern Conference dual 8-1.
Alton improved to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the SWC with the win.
Shannon Willis, Abby Fischer, Hannah Macias, Katie Cronin and Sami Clayton prevailed in singles, while the duos of Willis and Fischer, Mary McDaniel and Macias and Clayton and Cronin won in doubles action.
The Redbirds are idle until 4 p.m. Monday when they play host to Civic Memorial.
MARQUETTE CRUISES BY VANDALIA — The Marquette Catholic Explorers cruised by the Vandalia Vandals 8-1 on Thursday at Lewis and Clark Community College.
With the triumph the Explorers improved to 13-3 on the season.
Singles wins for Marquette came from: Elena Gable, Laura Moore, Abby Simonds, Anne Tassinari and Allison Hoefert. In doubles, Gable and Moore, Shelby Jones and Simonds and Tassinari and Hoefert teamed up for victories.
Next up for the Explorers are the Waterloo Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Monday at home.
EA-WR SHUTS OUT CARLINVILLE ON THE ROAD — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers traveled to Carlinville Thursday and blanked the Cavaliers 5-0.
With the win the Oilers improved to 13-3-1 on the season.
Luke Sims tallied two goals and an assist to lead the way on Thursday for EA-WR. Sebastian Ledesma added a goal and an assist, Jordan Schmigdall and Zac Lafferty each scored a goal and Josh Turner and Roger Garrison both dished out a single assist.
Goalie Nick Barrett corralled four saves in the win, too.
The Oilers now get hyped for a 2:30 p.m. Saturday contest with crosstown rival Roxana at the Wood River Soccer and Skate Park.
WOES CONTINUE FOR CM IN LOSS TO WATERLOO — The Civic Memorial Eagles welcomed the Waterloo Bulldogs to the Bethalto Sports Complex Thursday, but limped away with a 6-0 loss.
CM sank to 2-13 overall and 0-8 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
Colin Hall led the Eagles with four shots on goal Thursday, while Ryan Little fired two shots on target. Goalie Jacoby Robinson was busy, making 30 saves in the loss.
CM gets back in action at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, welcoming Triad to town.
GRANITE CITY GETS BLANKED BY JEFFERSON CITY — The Granite City Warriors lost 3-0 to Jefferson City on Thursday at Summit High School.
The Warriors dipped to 2-10-3 with the loss.
They return to action at 4 p.m. today vs. Bishop O'Hara at Summit.
EXPLORERS TRUDGE BY BRUSSELS IN THREE GAMES — The Marquette Catholic Explorers got by Brussels in three games Thursday on the road, winning 23-25, 25-21, 25-22.
The win is Marquette's second straight and its sixth out of the last seven matches. The Explorers are now 13-7.
Anna Daugherty spurred the offense with 10 kills, while Marissa Nosco set it up with 28 assists. Daugherty also had a team-high 10 service points, Michelle Cameron had team-best four aces and four blocks and Laura Hamilton supplied 18 digs. Cameron also had seven kills, Andria Pace had eight service points and Nosco had 11 digs.
The Explorers are back at it at 7 p.m. Monday at Metro East Lutheran for Prairie State Conference action.
ALTON WINS AT HAZELWOOD CENTRAL — The Alton Redbirds picked up a three-game victory at Hazelwood Central on Thursday in nonconference play.
The Redbirds improved to 21-4-2 with their fourth straight win.
AHS delves back into Southwestern Conference action at 6 p.m. Tuesday, welcoming Granite City to Godfrey.
CM STUMBLES IN HIGHLAND — The Civic Memorial Eagles continued their recent struggles Thursday, dropping a match in Highland, 25-9, 25-23.
With the setback the Eagles dropped to 7-9-3 overall on the season and 0-6 in Mississippi Valley Conference action.
CM returns to action in the MVC at 6 p.m. Tuesday, playing host to Waterloo.
MARQUETTE WINS TRIANGULAR OVER ROXANA, CM — The Marquette Catholic Explorers, Roxana Shells and Civic Memorial Eagles all met in a quadrangular meet Thursday at Cloverleaf Golf Course with the Explorers escaping with bragging rights.
Marquette carded a 171 to outlast Roxana (200) and CM (212).
Carlee Cronin and Ellie Kane of the Explorers tied for medalist honors with 41s. Brittany Barta (43) and Claire Dalton (46) rounded out the scoring lineup for Marquette.
Roxana received scoring from Andrea Mellenthin (44), Bailey Sharpmack (45), Sam Edwards (54) and Skylunn Valle (57).
The Eagles scoring came from, Sara Gwillim (42), Isabella Roberts (49), Reagan Walters (60) and Carmen Phillips (61).
ALTON COMPETES IN GARY BAIR INVITE — The Alton Redbirds competed in the Gary Bair Invite Thursday at Oak Brook Golf Course in Edwardsville.
Edwardsville's black squad won the tournament, carding a 418. Galesburg's Taylor Nesselroad garnered medalist honors, shooting a 74.
Alton carded a 495 as a team, finishing 10th as a team. The scoring for the Redbirds came from: Morgan Bemis (91), Katie Keller (94), Paige Wittman (95), Annie Maynard (106) and Addison Gregory (108).
