ROXANA 17, METRO EAST LUTHERAN 7 — A 10-run first inning was all the host Shells needed to set the scene for their lopsided nonconference victory over the Knights.
The 4-7 Shells won their third consecutive game and made the most of eight hits against the 4-7 Knights. Chance Foss led the way by going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, a triple and 3 RBIs. Jacob Maguire drove in 2 runs and teammate Austin Presley was 2-for-2.
BELLEVILLE EAST 6, GRANITE CITY 1 — The Warriors dropped their fourth in succession and fell to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the Southwestern Conference. Visiting Granite City managed only two hits against Belleville East hurler Evan Lawrence. He struck out 10 and walked 2 in a complete-game performance.
NOKOMIS 10, EA-WR 0 — It was all Nokomis as the Redskins walloped East Alton-Wood River in a Prairie State Conference game. The Oilers dropped to 2-9 and suffered their seventh successive setback.
SOFTBALL
SOUTHWESTERN 7, ROXANA 1 — A five-run seventh inning enabled the visiting Piasa Birds to defeat the Shells in South Central Conference action.
Alexis Counts had two hits and Abie Stahlhut drove in the Shells’ lone run as they sank to 5-7. Sydney Ambruso was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs for Southwestern, which posted its first win. The Piasa Birds improved to 1-7.
EA-WR 12, NOKOMIS 8 — Courtney Beneke enjoyed a big day as the visiting Oilers recorded their third win in a row and lifted their record to 5-7. It marked EA-WR’s second victory in as many days.
Beneke went 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. Haley Shewmake contributed three hits, Carly Campbell pitched in with two hits and two runs batted in. Theresa Hand collected three RBIs and winning pitcher Morgan Moxey smacked a double and a triple. A five-run fifth spelled the difference for the Oilers, who struck for 16 hits in their Prairie State Conference victory.
BELLEVILLE EAST 11, GRANITE CITY 3 — Host Granite City saw its record sink to 4-7 in a one-sided SWC loss to 8-3 Belleville East. The Warriors, who fell to 1-2 in the SWC, scored all of their runs in the third inning.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
EDWARDSVILLE 3, BELLEVILLE EAST 0 — Surging Edwardsville won its third in succession and improved to 6-2-1 by shutting out host Belleville East. The Tigers lifted their SWC mark to 2-0-1.
Jane Anne Crabtree, Paityn Schneider and Ashlin West tallied goals for the Tigers. All three came in the final 12 minutes of the first half. Regan Windau logged four saves for the shutout.
GRANITE CITY 0, O’FALLON 0 — Granite City and visiting O’Fallon battled to a scoreless tie in SWC competition. The Warriors went to 0-2-3 overall following their league opener. O’Fallon pushed its record to 4-3-2.
BOYS’ TENNIS
MARQUETTE 9, EA-WR 0 — It was all Explorers as they shut out the Oilers in local competition on the EA-WR courts.
Marquette Catholic’s Joe Segneri, Nick McCune, Peter Wendle, Tom Morrissey, Alex Cousley and Ryan Hecksel won in singles matches. The Explorers’ double teams of Nathan Walters/Daniel McCluskey, Nick Berkenbile/Dylan Hamm and Mark Vitali/Cousley also prevailed.
ALTON 9, METRO LUTHERAN 0 — The Redbirds boosted their record to 6-5 with a shutout of the host Knights in nonconference competition. Alton is back in SWC play Thursday against Collinsville.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
EDWARDSVILLE 2, GRANITE CITY 0 — Edwardsville defeated Granite City, 25-11, 25-9 in SWC action at Lucco-Jackson Gymnasium. The Tigers hiked their record to 7-7. They improved to 2-1 in the SWC. The Warriors dipped to 1-4 and 1-2. Ryan Bode (16 service points) and Mike Horton (14 assists) paced the Tigers.
