BEARS REMAIN UNBEATEN — The Metro East Bears are now 6-0 after beating Effingham 9-1 and Piatt County, 11-1, in six innings Friday in their opening games of the Greenville tourney.
Alton product Jacob St. Peters tossed a three-hitter to pocket the victory on the hill against Effingham, Civic Memorial grad Caleb Buhs belted a pair of triples to pace the offense in the win.
Metro East is scheduled to play Shelby County and New Baden on Saturday in the three-day tournament. The finals are set for Sunday. Then the Bears welcome Ballwin, Mo., at 7:30 Monday in a non-league game.They also play host to Fairview Heights at 7:30 Wednesday.
On Thursday, the Bears won at East St. Louis, 19-3 in their District 22 opener.
BETHALTO SPLITS WITH GRANITE CITY — The 17U Civic Memorial Eagles are 3-2 through five games in the SLABA league.
On Wednesday the Eagles split with visiting Granite City at the Bethalto Sports Complex, winning 7-6 in Game 1 and losing 8-2 in the nightcap.
Brandon Carpenter rapped a double and added a RBI, while Caden Clark and Geoffrey Withers each picked up two hits in the Game 1 win. Colin Overmeyer garnered the win on the mound.
In the Game 2 loss Carpenter and David Lane each had two hits. Carpenter had a double and a RBI also.
Trevor Panyik leads the Eagles in batting on the season thus far with a .385 batting average.
