REDBIRDS BLANK BULLDOGS — Caleb Currie and Jake Bohn combined forces to give the Alton hockey team a gratifying Mississippi Valley Conference Hockey Association win Tuesday.
Currie made 27 saves, and Bohn scored twice as the Redbirds blanked Highland, 4-0, at the East Alton Ice Arena. The Redbirds improved to 2-1 with the lopsided victory.
It was Currie, a sophomore goalie, making 27 saves for the Redbirds in keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard. Bohn then provided half of the offense, even though the Redbirds were outshot 27-20. Currie’s acrobatic work continually stifled the Bulldogs.
Bohn’s first goal, coming late in the opening period, put the Redbirds on top and they never looked back. Joe Boevingloh and Bryce Simon assisted on it.
Brandon Lang then made it 2-0 when he scored with 7:59 remaining in the second period. Zack Hunter and Simon assisted on the goal. Bohn added his second goal, assisted by Simon and Boevingloh, with 1:44 to play in the second period.
Tanner St. Peters made it 4-0 for Alton when he scored with 6:23 remaining in the third period. Lang got an assist.
It’s a new look for the Redbirds this season. They also have players from Marquette Catholic, so there’s a mix of talent for coach Abram Henson to blend.
TIGERS RIP EAGLES — Edwardsville scored a 12-0 win over Bethalto in the late MVCHA game at the Ice Arena. The game was called with 1:43 remaining in the second period because of the mercy rule.
Jake Aurelio scored two power play goals to spur the 2-0 Tigers, which tallied three times on power plays. Stanley Lucas and Lucas Tucker both added a pair of goals for the Tigers, who outshout the Eagles 34-3. Nine players scored for the winners. Lucas has a team-best four goals in two games.
Bethalto, which lost to Highland, 4-2 on Monday, fell to 1-2. Bethalto clashes with Alton at 8:45 p.m. Monday at the Ice Arena.
East Alton-Wood River, which also includes players from Roxana, is back in action Thursday. The Oilers meet Edwardsville in a 7:15 game.
