GWILLIM MEDALIST AS CM TOPS MATER DEI, MASCOUTAH — The Civic Memorial Eagles traveled to The Hills Golf Club at McKendree University and battled past Mater Dei and Mascoutah on Monday.
CM shot 193 to outdistance Mater Dei (197) and Mascoutah (206), while senior Sara Gwillim earned medalist honors firing a 37.
Joining Gwillim in the team scoring were: Isabella Roberts (45), Carmen Phillips (49) and Maisey Watson (62).
The Eagles are back in action at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday against Triad and Staunton.
BEMIS EARNS MEDALIST IN ALTON LOSS TO KAHOKS — The Alton Redbirds battled the Collinsville Kahoks in a Southwestern Conference dual at Rolling Hills Golf Course and despite the efforts of Morgan Bemis came up a little short.
Bemis garnered medalist honors with a 45, but the Redbirds finished 10 strokes behind the Kahoks, carding a 203 to Collinsville's 193.
Other scoring players for Alton were: Annie Maynard (51), Addison Gregory (51) and Paige Wittman (56).
AHS is idle until 4 p.m. Wednesday when it faces Granite City in SWC action at The Legacy Golf Course in Granite City.
GRANITE CITY GETS FIRST WIN OF THE YEAR — The Granite City Warriors have been grinding out games all season, but on Monday they finally nabbed their first win of the year, defeating Oakville 3-1 in the 61st annual CYC/Bob Guelker Tournament at Soccer Park in Fenton.
GCHS is now 1-7-3 with the victory, while Oakville dips to 6-5-1 with the loss.
The Warriors got one first-half goal and two more in the second half, led by Zach Druhe who scored twice. Eli Succarotte logged the other Granite City goal. Lucas Rainwater and Nathan Tanthavong picked up assists in the win.
The Warriors continue pool play with a 5 p.m. game at Saint Louis University High on Wednesday.
ALTON FALLS TO ALTHOFF ON THE ROAD — After going 3-0 in the McCluer Tournament and stringing together a five-game winning streak, the Alton Redbirds hit a bump in the road Monday, losing 3-1 to Althoff on the road.
The loss dropped the Birds to 7-3-2 on the season.
Nick Hatfield scored the lone goal for Alton on an assist from Skylar Funk. It followed up a 2-0 shutout of Hazelwood Central in the McCluer Tournament where Eric Ferenbach scored two goals on assists by Hatfield and Stephen Nguyen.
Alton is back on the road at 6:30 p.m. today at Gibault in another tough matchup.
CM GETS BY FATHER MCGIVNEY IN OT — The Civic Memorial Eagles trudged past Father McGivney 2-1 in overtime Monday at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
It was the second win of the season for the Eagles, who are now 2-11. CM returns is now idle until 5:45 p.m. Sept. 29 at Highland in Mississippi Valley Conference play.
Monday's loss snapped a nine-game losing skid for the Eagles.
ROXANA GETS BLANKED BY JERSEY — The Jersey Panthers kept their strong season going on Monday, cruising past the visiting Roxana Shells 7-0.
Roxana slipped to 5-6-1 with the defeat, while Jersey improved to 11-1 with the victory.
Ryan Herkert and Jake Ridenhour paced the Panthers with two goals each in the win.
The Shells are now idle until 6 p.m. Thursday when they make the trek to Pana for South Central Conference play.
EXPLORERS BLAST PAST HILLSBORO, VANDALIA ON THE ROAD — The Marquette Catholic Explorers kept their flawless dual record intact on Monday, blasting past Hillsboro and Vandalia on the road Monday at Hillsboro Country Club.
Marquette elevated its perfect mark to 13-0 by firing a 150. The Hiltoppers came up well short with a 197, while the Vandals were third with a 204.
Michael Holtz and Jack Patterson shared medalist honors, each shooting 1-over 37s. Nick Messinger and Kolten Bauer both had 2-over 38s to round out the team scoring. Sam Cogan (45) and Duncan McLain (46) rounded out the participating player.
The Explorers are back at it vs. the East Alton-Wood River Oilers at Rolling Hills Golf Course at 4 p.m. today.
ALTON STUMBLES AGAINST O'FALLON — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Tamarack Country Club on Monday to battle the O'Fallon Panthers in a Southwestern Conference dual and came up short.
The Redbirds shot a 179 as a team to finish short of O'Fallon's 154 score.
Alton was led by Max Hunter's 41. Hunter was joined in the team scoring by Tysen Barton (44), Austin Erthal (46) and Matt Moore (48). Sam Ballard (49) and Ryan Boyd (51) also competed.
Next up for the Redbirds is Belleville West at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course in SWC action.
MARQUETTE SHUTS OUT HILLSBORO — The Marquette Catholic Explorers traveled to Hillsboro Monday and cruised to 9-0 victory.
The victory improved the Explorers to 7-3 on the season in dual play.
Shelby Jones, Elena Gable, Laura Moore, Adri Ventigmilia, Abby Simonds and Anne Tassinari picked up singles wins. In doubles, Gable and Moore won at No. 1, Jones and Ventigmilia prevailed at No. 2 and Simonds and Tassinari were victors at No. 3.
Marquette returns to action at 4 p.m. today at the Simpson Tennis Complex at Lewis and Clark Community College.
EA-WR SWEEPS BY STAUNTON — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers played host to Staunton on Monday and raced to a straight-set victory, 25-22, 25-18.
The Oilers face the Marquette Catholic Explorers in a Prairie State Conference showdown at 6 p.m. tonight at Marquette.
