CM CLOSES REGULAR SEASON WITH VICTORY — The Civic Memorial Eagles downed the visiting Jersey Panthers 64-42 to close the regular season and Mississippi Valley Conference play.
CM ended the season at 19-10 overall and 6-4 in the MVC. The Eagles now enter the Class 3A Salem Regional. They play the winner of Effingham and Olney (Richland County) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Salem.
Against Jersey, CM went up 25-11 after one quarter, led 34-19 at the break and 53-29 after three quarters.
Allie Troeckler posted 27 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals to guide the Eagles. Alaira Tyus added 8 points, 5 assists and 5 steals. Katelyn Turbyfill pitched in 8 points and 7 rebounds and Journey Coffman had 7 points and 4 steals, as 10 players scored for the Eagles.
ALTON FALLS TO EDWARDSVILLE — Alton ran into a buzz saw in the Edwardsville Tigers at home Thursday, falling 67-38 to close the regular season and the Southwestern Conference portion of the season.
The Redbirds concluded the regular season with a 3-21 overall record and 0-14 in the SWC. The Tigers wrapped things up at 26-1 and 13-1.
AHS slipped behind 14-2 after one quarter on Thursday and could never recover.
"Our nerves and emotions got to us early in the game. We got frustrated with the flow of the game, and just dug a huge hole the first quarter,” Alton head coach Bobby Rickman said. "Second quarter was not much better, defensively things were not going right."
LaJarvia Brown paced the Redbirds with 18 points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers in the game. Jewel Wagner complemented Brown with 9 points and Ayonna Clanton netted 8 points, highlighted by two treys.
Edwardsville was led by MacKenzie Silvey with 18 points and Rachel Pranger with 16.
"It is tough when two seniors have to finish their potential last home game like that, but these young ladies are a special part of turning this program around,” said Rickman. “They compete and work hard, I hope the young players learn from them and continue to get our program to the level it is capable of competing."
Next for the Birds is the Class 4A Granite City Regional. They battle Chatham Glenwood at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in Granite City.
GRANITE CITY STUMBLES VS. BELLEVILLE WEST — The Granite City Warriors wrapped up the regular season with a 60-33 loss to Belleville East at home on Thursday.
The Warriors end the regular season with a 7-19 overall mark and a 2-12 record in the Southwestern Conference.
East owned a 20-11 advantage after one quarter and led 34-25 at halftime on the way to the win.
Granite City was led by junior Addaya Moore with 19 points. Morgan St. James of the Lancers paced all scorers with 32 points.
GCHS now delves into the postseason, playing host to the Class 4A Granite City Regional. The Warriors meet Quincy at 6 p.m. Monday to open the playoffs.
MARQUETTE ADVANCES TWO IN 3-POINT SHOOTOUT — The season closed for the Marquette Catholic Explorers on the team front on Tuesday, but two players will keep competing in the 3-point contest.
Caitlyn Hanlon and Lila Snider advanced by knocking down 7 of 15 treys on Thursday at the Class 2A Dupo Regional. Hanlon and Snider now move on to compete in the 3-point shootout at the Trico Sectional.
