EAGLES SOAR PAST MASCOUTAH — The Civic Memorial Eagles welcomed the Mascoutah Indians for a Mississippi Valley Conference contest Thursday and cruised to a 58-35 victory.
With the win, CM improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the MVC. Mascoutah dipped to 10-6 and 2-2 with the loss.
The Eagles nabbed a 15-6 advantage after one quarter and led 23-15 at half and 42-28 after three frames on the way to the win.
Nine CM players scored in the win, directed by Allie Troeckler with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Alaira Tyus netted 11 points, draining a trio of treys and Journey Coffman had 9 points on three 3-pointers.
The Eagles return to action at 6:15 p.m. tonight against Class 4A power Quincy Notre Dame in Bethalto.
SIZZLING EXPLORERS KEEP ROLLING — The Marquette Catholic Explorers kept their hot streak going, toppling Prairie State Conference rival Nokomis 58-40 on Thursday.
The Explorers are now 7-10 overall and 3-0 in the PSC. They have now won five of their last six contests.
Andria Pace guided Marquette Thursday with a double double. She poured in 26 points and yanked down 13 rebounds. Caitlyn Hanlon joined her in double figures with 10 points, while Brittany Pace and Taylor Aguirre each punched in 7.
The Explorers are back on the court at 7:30 p.m. Monday when they travel to Breese Mater Dei.
ALTON FALLS TO MAROONS — The Belleville West Maroons visited Alton High Thursday and handed the host Redbirds a 54-47 loss.
That elusive first Southwestern Conference win evaded the Birds again, as they dropped to 2-12 and 0-7 with the loss. West improved to 11-5 and 4-2.
“We played hard, we played as a team, we just did not have enough things go right for us tonight,” Alton head coach Bobby Rickman said.
Chamya Darough of the Maroons paced all scorers with 23 points. LaJarvia Brown directed the Redbirds with 18 points, while Jewel Wagner complemented her with 11 points.
“I really like the way the team is improving, it is not showing in the record, but this team is making some great improvements,” Rickman said.
Next up for Alton is a shootout with Kirkwood at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Academy.
GRANITE CITY LOSES TO EAST ST. LOUIS — The Granite City Warriors lost 55-22 to East St. Louis in Southwestern Conference action on Thursday at Memorial Gym.
Granite City sank to 3-10 and 1-5 with the loss, while East Side improved to 5-6 and 3-3.
The Warriors fell behind 18-7 after one quarter and could never recover. They trailed 26-13 at the break and 45-20 after three quarters.
Donyai Garrett paced Granite City with 17 points and 6 rebounds on the loss.
The Warriors are idle until 7:30 p.m. Monday when they travel to O'Fallon for a SWC affair.
ALTON SPLITS WITH WEST — The Alton Redbirds split with the Belleville West Maroons on Thursday in a Southwestern Conference match.
The Alton boys fell to the Maroons 3,040 to 2,872, while the AHS girls continued their dominance, besting West 2,878 to 2,719. On the girls' side, the Redbirds are now 10-0 on the season, while the AHS boys are 5-7.
Eryka Graham posted the high series for the Alton girls, turning in a 698 series. She also had the high game for the Birds with a 264.
For the boys, Jake Donahue steered the attack, rolling a team-high 639 series, while also producing a 225 for the high game on the Redbirds.
Alton is back at it at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday when it heads to Collinsville.
MASCOUTAH SWEEPS EAGLES — The Civic Memorial Eagles went to Mascoutah on Thursday and were promptly swept in Mississippi Valley Conference action on the lanes.
The CM boys fell 2,646 to 2,633 to the Indians in a tight match. The Eagle girls dropped the dual to Mascoutah 2,405 to 2,124.
On the boys' side, CM was led by Devin Davis with a 607 series, while on the girls' side it was Ashley Westbrook pacing the Eagles with a 514 series.
Next for CM is Southwestern at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday at Bowl Haven Lanes in Alton.
