CM CONTINUES WINNING WAYS AT STOVE TOP STUFFING TOURNEY — The Civic Memorial Eagles moved to 3-0 in the Stove Top Stuffing Tournament Friday, topping Taylorville 68-52 in Nokomis.
Four Eagles reached double figures in scoring Friday to pace the offense. David Lane led the attack with 13 points, while JaQuan Adams and Justin Williams each netted 12 and Adam Hill poured in 11. Brandon Hampton and Brett Lane scored 8 a piece for good measure and Hill steered the offense with 7 assists.
CM now plays defending tournament champion Granite City at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Nokomis.
ROXANA TOPS FREEBURG, ODIN TO PLAY FOR SILVER BRACKET TITLE — The Roxana Shells had a big day Friday at the Metro East Lutheran Turkey Tip-Off Classic.
Playing in the silver bracket, the Shells walloped Freeburg 52-29 and Odin 82-52 on Friday. With the pair of wins Roxana improved to 3-1 on the young season.
Against Freeburg, the Shells were directed by 21 points from Trace Gentry and 17 from Zach Golenor. Gentry nailed 5 3-pointers while Golenor had 3 treys. As a team, Roxana buried 9 shots from beyond the 3-point arc.
Other scorers were: Cody McMillen with 7 points, Blake Vandiver with 3 and Chris Pulley and Jacob Maguire with 2 points apiece.
In the rout of Odin, the Shells were deadly from 3-point range, setting single-game record for the program with 17 3-pointers. Gentry hit 9 of them on the way to a game-high 29 points. Vandiver chipped in 5 treys for 15 points, while Golenor also scored 15, Chance Foss netted 7, Pulley had 6, McMillen and Dakota Stumpf scored 4 each Maguire had 2.
Roxana battles Bunker Hill for the silver bracket title, or seventh place overall in the 18-team tournament, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
OILERS WIN TWO SATURDAY, REACH BRONZE BRACKET FINALS — After going winless in pool play at the MELHS Turkey Tip-Off, the East Alton-Wood River Oilers rebounded to win twice on Friday in bronze bracket action.
The Oilers staved off a late charge by Marissa to win 57-52 and then pummeled Valmeyer 59-39 in 2 games. EA-WR is now 2-2 on the season.
Against Marissa, senior Blake Marks poured in 25 points, highlighted by going 15 of 18 from the charity stripe. Cody Blacklock chipped in with 6 points and Justin Englar scored 5 in the win, too.
Marks stirred the offense again vs. Valmeyer, erupting for 29 points to go with 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Englar scored 12 points, accompanied by 8 assists and 4 steals, while Hunter Hall netted 8 points and had 4 rebounds and 2 blocks in the victory.
EA-WR goes for the bronze bracket championship, or 13th place overall, at noon Saturday against Christ Our Rock.
