CM SWEEPS KNIGHTS IN TWO — The Civic Memorial Eagles logged a much needed win on Thursday at Metro East Lutheran, sweeping the host Knights, 25-15, 25-20.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Eagles, with all the losses coming in the Mississippi Valley Conference. CM is now 8-10-3 on the season. MELHS slips to 5-15.
Junior Sydney Marshall stirred the offense, dishing out 23 assists, while also pacing the service game with 11 points. Cara Melton directed the defense with 20 digs, while Susan Buchanan and Kennedy Carnes led the offensive attack with six kills apiece. Buchanan also supplied two blocks at the net.
The Eagles will try and continue their winning ways at 6 p.m. Tuesday when they delve back into MVC action at Triad.
ALTON NO MATCH FOR MATER DEI — The Alton Redbirds welcomed powerhouse Mater Dei to AHS on Thursday and promptly lost in two games, 25-10, 25-10.
Alton is now 22-5 on the season following the loss. The Knights improved to 21-4.
The Birds could only muster nine kills as a team, led by Annie Evans with four. Sydney Schmidt picked up nine assists. Gwen Hunter, Savannah Fisher and Evans each supplied one block and two service points apiece in the loss, too.
The Redbirds get back at it today in the Highland Tournament. They face the host Bulldogs at 5 p.m.
EA-WR LOSES IN TWO AT MOUNT OLIVE — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers trekked to Mount Olive for Prairie State Conference play on Thursday and came away with a 25-13, 25-21 loss.
The Oilers return to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Southwestern.
ALTON RUNS PAST VISITING CM 8-1 — The Alton Redbirds played host to the Civic Memorial Eagles on Thursday and cruised to an 8-1 victory.
AHS finishes the dual portion of its season at 12-7 following the win.
Singles wins on Thursday came from: Shannon Willis at No. 1, Abby Fischer at No. 2, Mary McDaniel at No. 3, Hannah Macias at No. 4, Katie Cronin at No. 5 and Karen Rodriguez at No. 6. In doubles, Willis and Fischer combined to win at No. 1, while McDaniel and Macias paired up to prevail at No. 2.
The Redbirds join the rest of the Southwestern Conference at 1 p.m. today for the SWC Tournament at Edwardsville. The two-day event continues at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the EHS Tennis Center.
ROXANA BEATS LITCHFIELD IN EXTRA TIME — The Roxana Shells picked up a 2-1 victory in extra time Thursday at Litchfield in South Central Conference action.
With the win the Shells are now 7-12-1 overall and 4-4 in the SCC.
Tyler Svaboda picked up both goals for Roxana in the win. Both were unassisted.
The Shells close out SCC play and the regular season at 4:30 p.m. today at Greenville.
COLUMBIA BLANKS ALTON — The Alton Redbirds suffered their third consecutive loss on Thursday, falling 5-0 to the Columbia Eagles at Gordon Moore Park.
The loss dropped the Redbirds to 9-7-3 on the season. They haven't scored in three games since beating rival Edwardsville 1-0 on Oct. 1 at home.
Next up is the completion of a suspended game with the O'Fallon Panthers to be played at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on the new Piasa Motor Fuels Field at AHS. It will be the first game played on the new field at the high school.
The game will begin with 20:57 remaining in the first half and Alton owning a 1-0 lead over the Panthers. The original game at Moore Park was suspended due to lightning.
CM FALLS 1-0 AT MASCOUTAH — The Civic Memorial Eagles went to Mascoutah for Mississippi Valley Conference action Thursday and scampered away with a 1-0 loss.
The Eagles are now 2-15 following the loss and finish the MVC portion of the season at 0-10.
Mascoutah's goal came in the second half off the foot of Ethan Mayberry. It was unassisted.
CM goalie Jacoby Robinson made 20 saves in the loss.
The Eagles play Marquette Catholic at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at Gordon Moore Park to wrap up regular season play.
