EDWARDSVILLE 5, O’FALLON 0 — The Tigers savored a slice of the Southwestern Conference championship by walloping the Panthers at the District 7 Sports Complex.
Edwardsville, winning its 14th consecutive match, improved to 17-2-1 and finished 5-0-1 in the SWC. The Tigers tied with Collinsville for the top spot and earned their first conference championship since 2005, their first soccer title in the league. The Kahoks have won six successive SWC crowns.
Emily Kolo, Abby Crabtree, Paityn Schneider, Mareea Gaines and Ashlin West scored for the Tigers, who led 4-0 at half on Senior Night.
Goalies Marissa Bogner and Regan Windau shared in the shutout, the Tigers’ 12th this season. Edwardsville is now idle until Class 3A Granite City Regional competition next week.
O’Fallon dropped to 5-9-4 and finished 0-4-2 in the SWC.
ALTON 10, BELLEVILLE WEST 5 — The Redbirds improved to 18-5 overall by making the most of 8 hits at West. A five-run fourth spelled the difference as Alton erased a 4-0 deficit and shot to 8-3 in the Southwestern Conference.
Savannah Fisher went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and four RBIs to spark the Redbirds. Tami Wong was 3-for-5 and drove in two runs, while Taylor Herrin reached base 4 times in a 2-for-2 outing that included a pair of walks. Tomi Dublo contributed two RBIs.
Winning pitcher Brittany Roady scattered eight hits and struck out four in boosting her record to 17-5. Belleville West fell to 11-17 and 4-7 in bowing to Alton for the second time this season. The Maroons have lost three in a row and five of their last six games.
EDWARDSVILLE 2, ALTON 0 — On Senior Night at Lucco-Jackson Gym, the Tigers made it a memorable one as they downed Alton, 25-13, 25-14. Edwardsville raised its record to 17-12 and went to 6-4 in the SWC. Alton slipped to 2-14 and 0-8.
Tommy Hartnagel registered nine service points, including four aces, to spur Edwardsville. Mike Horton recorded 10 kills and Nick Allen added 8 kills. Setter Ben Lombardi supplied 25 assists.
EDWARDSVILLE 6, BELLEVILLE WEST 3 — The Tigers logged their 20th victory of the season and nabbed a portion of the SWC by defeating visiting Belleville West. Edwardsville raised its overall record to 20-5 and improved to 6-0 in the conference. West sank to 12-6 and 3-2.
Luke Motley, Alex Gray, Zach Trimpe and Erik Weiler won singles matches for the Tigers. Trimpe and Gray prevailed at No. 1 doubles, while Weiler and Motley triumphed at No. 2 doubles.
The Tigers will play host to the SWC tournament on Friday and Saturday.
