CM TOPS WESCLIN IN METRO CUP — The Civic Memorial Eagles logged their first win of 2015 on Thursday, beating the Wesclin Warriors 4-1 in the Metro Cup at Granite City's SWIC campus.
The Eagles are now 1-2 on the young season.
Trevor Panyik kicked a pair of goals to lead the way for CM. Mikey Stevenson and Kameron Denney each scored single goals for good measure in the win. Ryan Little dished out two assists for the Eagles, too.
Goalie Jacoby Robinson made 11 saves in the victory, too.
EA-WR ENDS IN TIE WITH BREESE CENTRAL — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers ended in a 2-2 tie with the Breese Central Cougars on Thursday on the road.
With the tie the Oilers are now 1-0-1 on the season.
Both goals came off the foot of Josh Turner for EA-WR. Nick Barrett corralled 10 saves in goal.
GRANITE CITY COMES UP SHORT IN EDWARDSVILLE — The Granite City Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the half at Edwardsville's District 7 Sports Complex Thursday, but in the end it wasn't enough in a 2-1 loss to the host Tigers.
Granite City fell to 0-1-1 with the loss, opening the Southwestern Conference season with a loss to EHS for the third straight season.
Nathan Tanthavong put the Warriors up 1-0 in the first half, but penalties plagued them in the second half. Edwardsville's Bayne Noll scored on a penalty kick following a Granite City foul inside the box.
The game-winner then came off the foot of Blake Broshow, six minutes of Latrell Smith of the Warriors was issued a red card for a hard tackle. Granite City had to play a man down the rest of the way.
Broshow's father Brent played on the 1990 state championship Granite City team.
GIRLS' GOLF
GRANITE CITY BESTS CM, ROXANA — The Civic Memorial Eagles played host to a triangular on Thursday at Cloverleaf Golf Course in Alton, but it was Granite City escaping with the victory.
The Warriors carded a 180 to outlast Roxana (190) and CM (198). The Jersey Panthers sent two individuals to Cloverleaf, too.
The Eagles' Sara Gwillim boasted medalist honors. Gwillim fired a 36, or 1-over par.
Granite City was led by Samantha Moerlien's 41 and joined in the scoring by: Megan Keel (44), McKenna Beaver (47) and Mallory O'Gara (48).
The second-place Shells were paced by Bailey Sharpmach's 41 and Andrea Mellenthin's 42.
Other scorers besides Gwillim for CM were: Isabella Robers (44), Carmen Phillips (57) and Sophie Blagaue (61).
BOYS' GOLF
ALTON COMES UP SHORT VS. COLLINSVILLE — The Alton Redbirds battled the Collinsville Kahoks in a Southwestern Conference dual Thursday at Arlington Golf Course in Granite City, but came up a little short.
Collinsville pulled out the conference dual with a 159. Alton carded a 191.
The Redbirds were led by Max Hunter's 42. He was joined in the team scoring by: Austin Erthal (46), Tysen Barton (51) and Ryan Boyd (52). Sam Ballard (58) and Connor Broyles (71) also competed on Thursday.
