EAGLES ELIMINATED AT GREENVILLE — Civic Memorial won the first game, but Jacksonville responded with victories in the next two sets and ousted the Eagles on Tuesday in a semifinal match of the Class 3A Greenville Regional.
The Eagles defeated the Crimsons, 26-24 in the opener, then bowed 25-23 and 25-18 in finishing their season with a 14-17-13 record. CM downed East Alton-Wood River in two games Monday at Greenville.
Fourth-seeded Jacksonville advanced to the regional final and faces top-ranked Quincy Notre Dame at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Raiders downed host Greenville, 25-12, 25-14 in the first semifinal.
Thursday’s survivor heads to next week’s Rochester Sectional.
CM head coach Amanda Biggs said, “It’s the best match we have played all season.”
Sydney Marshall did her best to spark the Eagles. She contributed 25 assists, 10 digs and six service points. Cara Melton and McKenna Geist both collected 14 digs, while Annika Ochs had 12 digs and two aces.
Kennedy Carnes supplied six kills, five solo blocks and four assisted blocks. Kaity Kappler provided four kills, four assisted blocks and an ace. Susan Buchanan had five kills, one solo block and two assisted blocks. Hannah Schmidt came up with five kills, two solo blocks and four assisted blocks. Kylie Linkeman amassed six kills, one solo block and two assisted blocks.
It was the final high school match for Geist, Linkeman and Daria Emerson, the only three seniors on the squad.
EXPLORERS OUSTED IN REGIONAL — Marquette Catholic’s bid to reach the finals of the Class 2A Carlinville Regional fell short Tuesday.
The host Cavaliers outlasted the third-seeded Explorers, 25-17, 25-16, to reach Thursday’s championship. Carlinville, the No. 5 seed, will clash with second-seeded Southwestern. The 19-8-3 Piasa Birds eliminated Gillespie in two games, 25-23, 25-17. The Cavs have claimed nine regional title in the past 10 years.
Thursday’s regional champion advances to next week’s Shelbyville Sectional.
Marquette finished its season with a 16-11 record, its best record since the Explorers went 26-4 in 2005 and captured a regional title.
The Explorers led early in the first game, but the Cavaliers used an 8-1 spurt at the end to close out the victory. Marquette owned a 7-2 advantage in the second game. Carlinville, however, went on a 17-5 scoring binge and never looked back in improving to 22-14.
Marissa Nosco spurred the Explorers with 10 assists and six service points, including two aces. Laura Hamilton had 14 digs, while Anna Daugherty and Michelle Cameron both registered three kills. Regina Guehlstorf logged three blocks.
