EXPLORERS FALL AT COLUMBIA — Lebanon used a strong first half to subdue Marquette Catholic, 62-37, in a first-round game Tuesday at the Columbia Thanksgiving Tournament. It was the season opener for both teams.
The Greyhounds jumped in front 18-11 by the end of the first quarter and then used a 26-point second stanza to amass a 44-18 advantage and never look back. Mallory Schmitt and Krista Bass both scored 17 points for the winners.
Caitlyn Hanlon tallied 11 points, best for the Explorers. Andria Pace contributed seven points.
In other action at Columbia, the host Eagles walloped Metro East Lutheran, 61-32. Championship semifinal games are scheduled Thursday night, with the title contest set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Marquette will play Metro East Lutheran at 6 p.m. Thursday in a consolation semifinal round game. The winner of that game advances to the consolation championship Saturday afternoon.
SHELLS, OILERS IN ACTION WEDNESDAY — Roxana and East Alton-Wood River play in separate games tonight in the week-long Dupo Cat Classic.
The Oilers meet Marissa at 6 p.m. in a consolation-round affair, while the Shells face host Dupo at 7:45 p.m. in a championship semifinal.
The Roxana-Dupo winner advances to Saturday’s title game, while the loser will play for third place the same day.
In games Tuesday, Valmeyer topped Chester, 41-28, and New Athens bested the Nashville junior varsity squad, 47-22.
ALTON TOURNEY RESUMES WEDNESDAY — Two games are slated tonight in the AHS Tip-Off Classic, which began Monday. No games were played Tuesday.
It’ll be Breese Mater Dei tangling with Springfield Lanphier at 6 p.m. Then defending champion Calhoun meets rival Jersey at 7:30 p.m. The Panthers downed Cahokia, 43-30, in their season opener Monday.
Alton, which lost to Mater Dei, 40-28, is idle. The Redbirds resume tourney competition at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Lanphier. The tourney concludes Saturday with the consolation championship at 4:30 p.m., the third-place game at 6 p.m. and the title test at 7:30 p.m.
EAGLES POST SHUTOUT — Bethalto scored a 4-0 win over host Granite City in a MVCHA hockey game at the Granite City Ice Rink. Goalie Justin Meyer logged the shutout.
League action resumes Thursday night in East Alton. It’s the Alton Redbirds playing the East Alton-Wood River Oilers at 8:45 p.m.
