EXPLORERS OUST CRIMSONS — Marquette Catholic used a stout defense to blank host Jacksonville, 1-0, on Tuesday in the Class 2A Jacksonville Regional semifinal.
The sixth-seeded Explorers, who improved to 12-6-4, will battle top-rated Chatham Glenwood at 6 p.m. Friday at Jacksonville in the regional championship match. The Titans walloped Taylorville, 11-0 in the semifinals.
Marquette has won six of its last seven matches after sitting at 6-5-3 on Sept. 23.
Zach Weinman provided the offense and Brandon Sanfilippo supplied the defense in the win over 13-9 Jacksonville, the No. 3 seed.
It was Weinman getting the only goal of the match — his 23rd of the season — in the 60th minute. Noah Fahnestock assisted on it. Sanfilippo, the Marquette goalie, made 12 saves, including a diving one on a first-half head shot, to preserve the shutout. It was his 11th of the season. The Explorers had a dozen shots on goal.
REDBIRDS FALL AT QUINCY — Host Quincy scored a 3-1 Class 3A regional semifinal victory over Alton and ended the Redbirds’ season at 9-10-3.
The Redbirds had a 7-2-2 record at one point and then 9-4-3, but they dropped their final six matches.
Quincy advanced to the regional finale and faces Collinsville, which eliminated Granite City, 4-0. The Blue Devils and Kahoks will clash at 5 p.m. Saturday in Quincy.
Matt Bower of Alton scored eight minutes into the second half for the Redbirds’ lone goal. But his goal couldn’t offset the work of Quincy’s Bradyn Nokes.
He scored all three of the Blue Devils’ goals, including two in the first half, as the winners improved to 15-4-2.
Meanwhile, Edwardsville welcomes O’Fallon at 6 p.m. Saturday in the finals of the Class 3A Tigers’ Regional.
