EXPLORERS START AT ROXANA — Marquette Catholic High had mixed results in its season-opening matches Tuesday in the seventh annual Roxana Tournament.
The Explorers went 1-2 in their first night of competition. Marquette defeated Gillespie, but lost to Calhoun and Mount Olive. The 2-0 Warriors and the 3-0 Wildcats are unbeaten in the tourney that concludes Saturday. Jersey posted a 3-0 record in play Monday and host Roxana was 2-0.
Anna Daugherty supplied nine kills, Marissa Nosco collected 16 assists and Katie Gierer contributed 14 digs in the Explorers’ win over Gillespie. The Miners won the first game, 27-25, before winning 25-17 and 15-10.
Calhoun def. Marquette, 25-15, and 25-13, while Mount Olive topped the Explorers. Marquette won the first game, 25-19, then fell 25-20 and 16-14. Nosco had 10 assists and Gierer provided seven digs against Calhoun. Nosco (18 assists), Gierer (16 digs) and Brittany Pace (five kills and four blocks) shined against Mount Olive.
Calhoun’s Grace Baalman, Emma Baalman and Kassidy Klocke teamed for 24 kills in the Warriors’ two-game victory over the Explorers.
In other matches, Calhoun downed Dupo, 25-4 and 25-10; Mount Olive bested Dupo, 27-25 and 25-13, while Gillespie defeated Dupo, 25-21 and 25-17.
It’ll be unbeaten Roxana and Jersey clashing at 8:30 Saturday morning. Marquette plays Dupo at the same time. The Shells and arch-rival East Alton-Wood River are scheduled to meet at 10:30 that morning.
The final round is slated to get going at 11:30 with the fifth and ninth-place matches. The championship affair is scheduled for 1:30.
OILERS WIN AT CARLINVILLE – Cameron Foust scored the match’s only goal as EA-WR shaded Trenton Wesclin, 1-0 in its season debut at Trenton.
Foust got credit for a goal off a throw-in that bounced off a Wesclin player and went in the goal. EA-WR goalie Nick Barrett made five saves to get the shutout. The Oilers outshot the Warriors 20-5.
CM FALLS TO FREEBURG — The Civic Memorial Eagles fell to the Freeburg Midgets 5-1 on Tuesday in the Metro Cup Tournament.
The Eagles are now 0-2 following the loss. Trever Panyik got the lone goal for CM on an assist from Colin Hall.
Freeburg led 2-0 at halftime and tacked on three more goals in the second half.
WARRIORS WIN QUAD – It’s a 3-0 getaway for the Granite City Warriors’ following a successful start at The Legacy, their home course.
Granite City shot a 178 to prevail. Highland was second at 181, followed by Triad at 184 and Civic Memorial at 185. The Eagles are 2-3.
Seniors Gavin Grote and Brandon Merz both carded scores of 43 to pace the Warriors.
