GRANITE CITY SHUTS OUT DUCHESNE — The Granite City Warriors blanked Duchesne 2-0 at the Soccer Park in Fenton on Thursday.
It was the second win on the season and this week for the Warriors, who improved to 2-8-3 with the win.
Zach Druhe and Austin Mollet supplied the goals for GCHS, while Lucas Rainwater dished out both assists. Ryan Houston logged four saves in goal to secure the shutout.
All the scoring came in the second half of the match.
ROXANA FALLS TO PANA — The Roxana Shells fell 2-1 to the Pana Panthers in South Central Conference action on the road Thursday.
Roxana is now 5-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the SCC after the loss.
ALTON, CM BATTLE IN QUAD AT CLOVERLEAF — The Alton Redbirds took second, while the Civic Memorial Eagles fell into fourth at a quadrangular at Cloverleaf Golf Course in Alton on Thursday.
Triad won the event, shooting a 180, while Alton was second with a 187, Mater Dei was third with a 187 and CM came in fourth with a 202. The Redbirds topped the Knights on a fifth-score playoff.
Alton's scoring came from: Annie Maynard (43), Morgan Bemis (45), Paige Wittman (47), Jenna Fleming (52) and Addison Gregory's 52 won the fifth-score playoff. It was the lowest team score of the season for the Birds.
CM was led by Sara Gwillim, who shot 40, good for second best overall on the day. Isabella Roberts (43), Maisey Watson (59) and Sophie Blagoue (60).
MARQUETTE FALLS IN TWO TO MATER DEI — The Marquette Catholic Explorers welcomed powerhouse Mater Dei to Alton on Thursday and lost in straight games, 25-19, 25-13.
It was vast improvement for the Explorers, who were pummeled by the Knights 25-7, 25-2 last year. The loss dropped Marquette to 11-7 on the season.
The Explorers led 17-15 in the first set, but the Knights reeled off a 10-2 run to win it. Mater Dei started strong in Game 2 and never trailed.
Anna Daugherty had a team-high four kills, while Brittany Pace and Michelle Cameron each contributed three kills. Brittany Pace had a team-high six blocks, while sister Andria Pace supplied five and Cameron had three.
Laura Hamilton paced the defense with 13 digs and Marissa Nosco guided the offense and the service game. Nosco dished out 10 assists, while logging five service points and two aces.
CM STUMBLES IN MASCOUTAH — The Civic Memorial Eagles stumbled in Mississippi Valley Conference action, losing 25-15, 25-14.
CM sank to 7-7-3 overall with the loss. The Eagles are 0-4 in MVC play.
Statistically, Kennedy Carnes and Susan Buchanan each had two kills, while Carnes added one solo block and two assists, Sydney Marshall had four assists and Cara Melton picked up 10 digs.
CM will now look for its first MVC victory when it welcomes Jersey to Bethalto at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Panthers are 8-10 and 0-4 in the MVC.
MARQUETTE STYMIES GIBAULT — The Marquette Catholic Explorers welcomed Gibault to the Simpson Tennis Complex at Lewis and Clark Community College Thursday, winning 9-0.
Marquette is now 10-3 on the season following the win.
Singles winners were: Shelby Jones, Elena Gable, Laura Moore, Adri Ventigmlia, Abby Simonds and Anne Tassinari. In doubles, Gable and Moore, Jones and Ventigmlia and Simonds and Tassinari were all victorious.
The Explorers next travel to Greenville at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
