CM, MARQUETTE, ROXANA GET INDIVIDUALS THROUGH IN CARTERVILLE — Civic Memorial's Sara Gwillim, Marquette Catholic's Carlee Cronin and Roxana's Andrea Mellenthin all saw their senior seasons continue Monday at the Class A Carterville Sectional.
Gwillim fired an 83 to lead the Greater Alton area trio, while Cronin carded an 85 and Mellenthin shot an 86 to all qualify in the 10 advancing individuals on non-advancing teams at the sectional.
Unfortunately, Marquette came up short on the team front, finishing eighth in the field with a 377. The top three teams advance to state. Massac County was the champion with a 336, while Althoff carded a 348 and Mount Carmel shot 351 to also qualify for state.
Abbey Leighty of Mount Carmel was the individual medalist with a 75. She defeated Carlin Flannery of Massac County in a seven-hole, sudden death playoff for medalist honors.
The Class A state tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.
ALTON'S BEMIS, GRANITE CITY'S KEEL DON'T MOVE ON — Alton's Morgan Bemis and Granite City's Megan Keel were unable to keep their seasons going on Monday at the Class AA Normal Community Sectional.
The two sophomores advanced out of regionals, but were unable to punch their tickets for state on Monday. Keel missed the cut by three strokes, shooting a 91, while 88 was the final individual qualifying score. Bemis shot a 96 to miss the cut.
In the team pool, Galesburg escaped as champions with a 356, while O'Fallon (363) and Normal Community (363) also advanced. O'Fallon Regional champ Edwardsville narrowly missed advancing to state, shooting a 365. The Tigers didn't qualify any individuals either.
Triad junior Brianna Benardin (87) was the only local advancing player besides the Panther team.
The Class AA state tournament gets underway on Friday and concludes Saturday at Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth.
KEEL AND BROWN COME UP SHORT FOR WARRIORS IN ALTON — Granite City had two golfers, David Keel and Riley Brown, compete in the Class 3A Alton Sectional at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course on Monday, unfortunately neither could advance to state.
Keel shot an 89, while Brown carded a 96 on Monday. The last advancing score was an 80 at Spencer T. The host Redbirds didn't have any participants in the sectional.
Edwardsville came away with the championship and the individual medalist for the tournament. The Tigers carded a 308 as a team, outshooting second place New Lenox (Providence Catholic) (314) and Homewood-Flossmoor (318), the other two state-qualifying teams.
Sophomore Tanner White garnered top individual honors for EHS with a 71. Other advancing local players were: David Crosby of Belleville West (75) and Logan Harris of O'Fallon (76).
The Class 3A state finals are set for Friday and Saturday at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington.
