ALTON LOSES IN CONSOLATION FINALS — The Alton Redbirds dropped the consolation bracket title tilt to Lebanon, Mo., 48-42, at the Jefferson City Holiday Tournament.
Following the loss, Alton is now 2-10 on the season.
The Birds trailed 16-14 after one quarter and 26-22 at the break. They stayed close in the second half, but could never get over the hump, trailing 38-33 after three quarters.
"Early in the game, their pressure bothered us and caused some mistakes and easy baskets for them in transitions,” said Alton head coach Bobby Rickman. “We settled down and battled back, but 16 points in a quarter is too many for us to give up and be able to win a game."
LaJarvia Brown led the Redbirds with 19 points, while Jewel Wagner netted 13 points.
Kelsey Winfrey led all scorers with 20 points. The junior guard is committed to Missouri.
"Winfrey is a great player, and only a junior, she was difficult for us to handle and we did not step up and make some stops against her we should have. But I think LaJarvia opened a lot of eyes in this tournament how good she can play basketball," Rickman said.
Brown made the all-tournament team for Alton. She scored 61 points in the tournament, placing her eighth all-time on the tourney scoring list.
Rickman praised her and Wagner's play in the tournament.
"The two seniors stepped up for our team and played well all tournament long, we get that night in and night out from Jewel and LaJarvia, then get some production and balance from those around them we can turn things around in January," Rickman said.
