MARQUETTE SHOOTS LOW IN LITCHFIELD — The Marquette Catholic Explorers kept rolling on the links Wednesday.
Marquette fired a 156 to distance itself from Pana (171), Litchfield (184) and Roxana (196) in a quadrangular meet at the Litchfield Country Club Wednesday. The Explorers are now 3-0 on the season.
Junior Michael Holtz paced the crowd, carding a 38 to garner medalist honors. He was joined in the team scoring by Jack Patterson, who also shot 38, Duncan McLain (39) and Nick Messinger (41). Kolten Bauer also fired a 41 and fellow freshman Sam Cogan carded a 47.
ALTON PREVAILS IN SEASON OPENER — The Alton Redbirds got off on the good foot to start the 2015 season.
AHS traveled to Springfield and blanked Sacred Heart-Griffin 3-0 on Wednesday. It was a good precursor for the Redbirds' tournament which gets going Friday at Gordon Moore Park. Alton plays Triad at 4:30 p.m. then Dupo at 9:30 a.m. and Edwardsville at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
On Wednesday the Birds received a balanced attack on offense. They got goals from C.J. Nasello, Eric Ferenbach in the first half to nab a 2-0 advantage and Matt Bower tacked on the other in the second half on a through ball. Skylar Funk assisted Nasello, while Nick Hatfield dished out two assists, one to Ferenbach and the other to Bower on through balls.
Devin Colley and Brandon Wilson combined for the shutout in goal. Colley played 60 minutes and gave way to Wilson for the last 20 of the contest.
Alton's JV squad collected a 2-0 win at SHG also. Michael Stark and Sam Stutz logged the goals in that triumph.
ALTON CRUISES BY MELHS — The Alton Redbirds cruised to a 9-0 victory to open play on Wednesday at Metro East Lutheran in Edwardsville.
Everyone won in straight sets for the Birds on Wednesday. In singles, Shannon Willis won at No. 1, while Abby Fischer corralled the victory at No. 2, Mary McDaniel prevailed at No. 3, Hannah Macias was the victor at No. 4, Katie Cronin came out on top at No. 5 and Sami Clayton got the win at No. 6.
Willis and Fischer combined to win 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, with McDaniels and Macias prevailing 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Clayton teaming with Karen Rodriguez to win 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Alton gets back in action at 4 p.m. today, playing host to East Alton-Wood River.
ALTON COMES UP SHORT IN E'VILLE — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Oak Brook Golf Course in Edwardsville on Wednesday and unfortunately came up short in a quadrangular match.
The Birds carded a 220 to slide in fourth in the group. Host Edwardsville won with a 165, while Traid (185) and Highland (208) finished second and third respectively.
Addasyn Zeller of the Tigers earned medalist honors, carding a 39.
Alton was led by Morgan Bemis, who fired a 48. The rest of the AHS scorers included: Katie Keller (56), Annie Maynard (57) and Jenna Fleming (59).
The Redbirds are now idle until 1 p.m. Saturday when they join local teams Marquette Catholic, Civic Memorial and Roxana in the Marquette Blast Off Tournament at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course.
SHELLS TAKE SECOND IN HILLSBORO — The Roxana Shells battled to second place in a triangular at Hillsboro Country Club on Wednesday.
The Shells shot 222 to finish runner-up to host Hillsboro (196), while Litchfield came in third with a 242.
Hillsboro's Lindsey Storm was medalist with a 41 on the par-36 course. Roxana's Andrea Mellenthin came in second, carding a 46.
CM TAKES THIRD AT ACORNS — The Civic Memorial Eagles participated in a quadrangular match on Wednesday at Acorns Golf Links in Waterloo on Wednesday and escaped with a third-place finish.
Belleville Althoff was the winner with a 171, while host Waterloo (188) took second, CM was third (212) and Freeburg (227) came in fourth.
