MARQUETTE BLANKS CM — The Marquette Catholic Explorers welcomed the Civic Memorial Eagles to Lewis and Clark Community College on Wednesday and promptly shut them out 9-0.
Marquette raised its season mark to 9-3 overall, while the Eagles sank to 1-9.
Wins in singles for the Explorers came from Shelby Jones, Elena Gable, Laura Moore, Adri Ventigmlia, Abby Simonds and Anne Tassinari. In doubles, wins were from Gable and Moore at No. 1, Jones and Ventigmlia at No. 2 and Simonds and Tassinari at No. 3.
Next up for Marquette is a 4 p.m. match today at home vs. Gibault.
EA-WR ROLLS BY FATHER MCGIVNEY, 6-0 — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers kept their solid season rolling with a 6-0 win over Father McGivney on Wednesday.
The Oilers improved to 9-3-1 with the win.
David Barrett starred for EA-WR, logging three goals and two assists in the win, including the game-winning score. Zac Lafferty tacked on a goal and two assists, while Luke Sims had a goal and an assist, Devin Curtis had a goal and Roger Garrison dished out one assist.
Nick Barrett secured three saves in goal.
The Oilers are idle until 5:30 p.m. Monday when they head to Greenville.
EXPLORERS LOSE TO TIMBERLAND — The Marquette Catholic Explorers fell 3-0 to Timberland on Thursday at Soccer Park in Fenton.
With the setback, Marquette is now 6-5-3 on the season. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak.
The Explorers trailed 2-0 at the break and Timberland tacked on an insurance goal in the second half. Marquette was outshot 10-8 and were tied 4-4 on corners in the loss. Goalie Brandon Sanfilippo logged eight saves.
The Explorers return to the field at 4:30 p.m. today vs. Ladue at the J.J. Eagan Center in Florissant.
GRANITE CITY FALLS TO SLUH — A game after picking up their first win of the season, the Granite City Warriors ran into a tough Saint Louis University High on Wednesday, losing 3-0.
SLUH scored all three goals in the first half to blank GCHS. The Warriors dipped to 1-8-3 with the loss.
Granite City now plays Duchesne at 7:45 p.m. tonight at the Soccer Park in Fenton.
CM TAKES SECOND IN TRIANGULAR; GWILLIM CO-MEDALIST — The Civic Memorial Eagles battled Triad and Staunton in a triangular at Oak Brook Golf Course in Edwardsville on Wednesday, coming in second place.
CM shot 205, coming up short of Triad's 185, but well ahead of Staunton's 225.
Sara Gwillim of the Eagles was co-medalist, carding a 4-over 40. She was joined in the scoring lineup by: Isabella Roberts (45), Carmen Phillips (56) and Maisey Watson (64).
ALTON FALLS BY SIX STROKES TO MAROONS — The Alton Redbirds put forth a valiant effort against Belleville West in a Southwestern Conference dual Wednesday, but came up a little short.
Alton shot 180, just six strokes behind West's 174.
Max Hunter led the Birds with a 40 and was joined in the team scoring by: Austin Erthal (48), Zane Striegel (48) and Ryan Boyd (49).
