OILERS START WITH A WIN — Morgan Moxey came out firing in the East Alton-Wood River High season opener Tuesday.
The sophomore left-hander pitched a 1-hitter and struck out 16 in hurling the Oilers to a 7-0 nonconference win at Greenville. Moxey, who allowed only a sixth-inning single, gained her second career win and first shutout.
“It was a nice start for us and a great start for Morgan,” EA-WR coach Dana Emerick said.
Peyton Young ignited the 6-hit Oilers’ attack with 2 hits, one a triple. She also drove in a run, as did Courtney Beneke. The Oilers scored in every inning but the fifth.
Emerick also praised catcher Carly Campbell for her defensive work in assisting Moxey and her gem.
EA-WR is scheduled to play Wednesday at Waterloo and then welcome Trenton Wesclin in its home opener Thursday. The Oilers are also at Carrollton on Saturday.
TIGERS OUTSLUG EAGLES — Edwardsville used a 16-hit barrage to defeat Civic Memorial, 12-5, in the season opener for both teams.
Katelyn Turbyfill hit a solo home run and Cassie Reed added a two-run double for the Eagles against Edwardsville pitcher Jordan Garella. Reed was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and those two RBIs.
However, the Tigers used home runs from Allison Loehr and Sarah Hangsleben to counteract the Eagles’ 8-hit attack at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
Hangsleben collected four RBIs, thanks to a two-run home run and two-run single. Teammate Anna Burke chipped in with three hits. Loehr had two hits, along with Jordan Corby, Rachel Anderson and Taryn Brown.
CM trailed 7-2 going into the fifth and then scored three runs to make a game of it. Then Edwardsville responded with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
Freshman Kaitlynn Wrenn pitched 3.2 innings for the Eagles and absorbed the loss. Ryan Allison finished up. The Eagles are scheduled to welcome Belleville Althoff on Wednesday and Bunker Hill on Friday.
COMETS TOP OILERS — Greenville snapped a 5-5 tie in the fifth and went on to beat visiting EA-WR, 12-5, in the season opener for both teams. The Comets scored seven runs over the final two innings for their nonconference victory.
Blake Marks paced the Oilers with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. He went 2-for-3 as did teammate Zaide Wilson, who had a double and drove home a run.
The Oilers are slated to entertain rival Roxana in a 4:30 p.m. game Thursday.
KNIGHTS BOW TO MAROONS — Host Belleville West scored early and often to down Metro East Lutheran, 15-0, in a five-inning nonconference season opener for both teams.
The Knights managed just one hit, Paul Kubicek’s single to center in the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Jake Jump took the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 9 earned runs in 2.2 innings.
Logan Betz and Cal Kossina each had two hits for the Maroons and they teamed for three RBIs. They scored six times in both the third and fourth innings. Luke Vallandingham pitched four innings and logged the win.
MELHS resumes play Friday at Mascoutah.
EXPLORERS FALL IN METRO CUP — Triad got a goal late in the second overtime to edge Marquette Catholic, 2-1, in Metro Cup play at Edwardsville High. It was the season opener for both teams.
Meaghan Smith of the Knights scored the winner with 45 seconds left in the second overtime and keep the match from being decided by penalty kicks.
Bailey Hartrich of the Explorers scored at the 36th minute to knot things after Smith put Triad ahead 1-0 with a goal at the 28th minute. The match was delayed a total of 80 minutes because of lightning.
Marquette meets Springfield High in consolation play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, while Triad will face Edwardsville in championship round action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
