TIGERS TOP REDBIRDS — Edwardsville started quickly and never let up in walloping Alton, 11-2, during MVCHA action Tuesday at the East Alton Ice Arena.
Tyler Hinterser’s goal 10 seconds into the game set the tone for the Tigers’ lopsided victory in their league opener. Alton, which defeated Granite City, 7-2, on Monday, slipped to 1-1.
Hinterser, Tyler Schaeffer and Christian Blandina all scored twice for Edwardsville, which outshot Alton, 65-11. The Tigers fired 25 shots on goal in the first period.
Edwardsville improved to 1-0 in the MVCHA, while Alton dropped to 1-1. The Redbirds were coming off a 7-2 victory over Granite City on Monday.
Redbirds’ goalie Caleb Currie made 54 saves in trying to thwart the Tigers. EHS led 3-0 after the first period. Edwardsville then tallied three times early in the first eight minutes of the second period to pad its lead.
The Redbirds got on the board when Joseph Boevingloh punched home a rebound shot past Edwardsville goalie Matthew Griffin with 4:31 remaining in the second period. Scott Waldrup logged the assist.
After Edwardsville forged ahead, 7-1, Zack Hunter of the Redbirds countered with a goal late in the second period. Then the Tigers scored four times in the third period to complete the scoring. Blandina got both of his goals in the final period.
Schaeffer and Hinterser both added assists in the win. Schaeffer scored a team-record 48 goals last season and Hinterser notched 46 goals.
While the Redbirds are idle until Tuesday, Nov. 10, when they meet Highland in a 7:15 p.m. game at the East Alton Ice Arena, the Tigers face Bethalto that night at 8:45, also in East Alton.
EAGLES BLANK OILERS — A potent offense and a stout defense powered Bethalto by East Alton-Wood River, 6-0, in MVCHA competition at the East Alton Ice Arena.
The Eagles’ gave new head coach Derek Kahl his first victory. Bethalto lifted its record to 1-0, while EA-WR fell to 0-2.
Anthony Russo paced the offensive onslaught for the Eagles, securing a hat trick with three second-period goals. Konnar Loewen added a goal and two assists, while Jacoby Robinson had a goal and an assist, Jayden Kahl scored a goal, Joseph Watson dished out two assists and Justin Wendle and Kirklan Hansen each had one assist.
The Oilers are scheduled to resume league play at 8:45 p.m. Monday against Granite City in East Alton.
