REDBIRDS BOW TO TIGERS — The second time was better for the Alton Redbirds, but the Edwardsville Tigers still proved too strong on the ice.
The unbeaten Tigers beat the Redbirds, 5-1, Tuesday in a MVCHA game at the East Alton Ice Arena. Edwardsville, which defeated Alton, 11-2, earlier this season, improved to 12-0.
The 4-3 Redbirds couldn’t withstand the Tigers’ three-goal opening period. And Tyler Schaeffer’s high-scoring ways. He notched a hat trick.
Colin Kelsey’s goal just 1:26 into the first period set the tone for the Tigers’ victory. Schaeffer then logged his first goal five minutes later and Edwardsville never looked back.
Schaeffer also tallied again in the period as the Tigers peppered Redbirds’ goalie Caleb Currie with 19 shots. He had 50 saves overall. Edwardsville goalie Matthew Griffin made eight saves in the game and only allowed a goal late in the second period.
Scott Waldrup of the Redbirds scored their lone goal with 40 seconds to play in the period. Bryce Simon registered the assist.
The Birds are idle until Dec. 8 when they face Bethalto in an 8:45 p.m. game at the Ice Arena. Edwardsville goes to Granite City on Dec. 7.
EAGLES TOP KAHOKS — Bethalto scored a pair of third period goals to shade Collinsville and lift its record to 4-4. The Eagles and Kahoks were tied 2-2 after two periods. Collinsville led 2-1 after the first period.
Bethalto doesn’t play again until Dec 7, when the Eagles meet O’Fallon in a 7:15 p.m. game at the East Alton Ice Arena.
WARRIORS FALL TO EAGLES — Columbia outlasted Granite City, 6-5, in a wild one at the Granite City Ice Rink. The Warriors, who dropped to 1-6, trailed 2-1 after the first period and 4-3 after two periods.
Granite City is back in action Dec. 8 with a home game against Edwardsville.
OILERS BEATEN BY COMETS — Host Greenville rambled by East Alton-Wood River, 64-18, in a nonconference game. The Comets led 30-8 at half and coasted the rest of the way.
