GIRLS’ TENNIS
ALTON 6, CIVIC MEMORIAL 3 – The Redbirds finished their dual-match season at 8-7 on Thursday with a victory over the Eagles at CM.
Alton got singles victories from Abby Fischer, Hannah Macias, Sam Clayton, Maddie Saenz, Mackenzie Giertz and a win from its No. 3 doubles team of Nickie Lowe and Val Walters.
CM, which finished its dual-match season at 6-12 after getting one victory last year, had a victory in No. 4 singles from Cassie Reed and got wins from the its No. 1 doubles team of Reed and Tahler Davis and its No. 2 doubles team of Gwen Lewis and Kylee Thoroughmann.
The Redbirds will compete in the Southwestern Conference Tournament at 2 today at Belleville West. The Eagles will compete in the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament at 10 today.
COLLINSVILLE 8, GRANITE CITY 1 – The Warriors wrapped up their dual-match season with a loss to the Kahoks on Thursday at Collinsville.
Granite City, which had one victory this season, will play in the Southwestern Conference Tournament at 2 today at Belleville West.
O’FALLON 9, MARQUETTE CATHOLIC 0 – The Explorers dropped to 7-8 with a loss to the Panthers on Thursday.
Marquette will compete in the Class A Triad Sectional on Oct. 14.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
ROXANA DEF. MARQUETTE CATHOLIC 25-17, 25-15 – The Shells improved to 17-9 with a two-game win over the Explorers on Thursday at Alton.
The victory also clinched a winning season for Roxana, which finished 14-20 last year.
The Shells will play in the Red Bud Tournament at Saturday. They will play Dupo at 10 a.m. and Red Bud at 11 a.m. in pool play.
The Explorers dropped to 10-14 and will play a home match against Gibault at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Laura Hamilton had 15 digs, Regina Guehlstorf had five blocks, Michelle Cameron had five kills, Karoline Lauritzen had five service points and Marissa Nosco finished with 14 assists for Marquette.
EDWARDSVILLE DEF. BELLEVILLE EAST 25-8, 25-20 – The Tigers improved to 17-3 overall and 5-0 in Southwestern Conference play with a two-game win over the Lancers at Belleville East.
Rachel Verdun finished with 14 assists, eight digs and five kills, Corinne Timmerman and Rachel Pranger each had seven kills, Kate Martin finished with six kills, Megan Woll had nine digs and Nicki Meyer finished with seven digs for Edwardsville, which won its ninth straight match.
The Tigers will play Lincoln-Way Central at 5 tonight in the Mizuno Tournament.
MATER DEI DEF. ALTON 25-17, 25-17 – The Redbirds dropped to 12-13-1 with a two-game loss to the Knights on Thursday at Mater Dei.
Alton dropped its fifth match in a row. The Redbirds will play in the Highland Tournament this weekend. They play Highland and Breese Central tonight and East St. Louis, Carbondale and Vandalia on Saturday.
CHRIST OUR ROCK DEF. FATHER MCGIVNEY 25-23, 25-19 — With Thursday's loss on the road the Griffins are now 3-13 on the season.
Father McGivney returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Roxana.
BOYS’ SOCCER
EA-WR 7, GILLESPIE 1 -- The Oilers clinched their fourth straight winning season after beating the Miners on Thursday at Wood River Soccer Park.
EA-WR finished its regular season at 11-9. The seven goals scored marked a season high for the Oilers, who will play Metro East Lutheran in the Class 1A Greenville Regional semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
CM 1, MASCOUTAH 1 — The Eagles battled to a tie with the Mascoutah Indians on Thursday at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
With the tie, CM is now 7-9-1 overall and 0-8-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
Trevor Panyik scored the Eagles' lone goal. Kameron Denney supplied the assist.
CM gets one more chance at that elusive MVC victory at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Jersey in its regular season finale.
COLUMBIA 1, ALTON 0 – The Redbirds dropped to 14-4-2 with a loss to Columbia on Thursday on the road.
Alton was shut out for the fifth time this season and its streak of five consecutive shutouts came to an end. Columbia, which is 15-1-3, is 4-0-1 against Southwestern Conference opponents this season.
The Redbirds wrap up their regular season at 6:45 p.m. next Thursday at Collinsville. Alton will play the Kahoks in regional tournament play in two weeks.
METRO EAST LUTHERAN 3, STAUNTON 1 – The Knights improved to 7-9-1 with a 3-1 win over Staunton on Thursday at home.
Kyle Asbury, Stephen Korte and Kedrick Norwood scored goals for MELHS, which ended its regular season and will play East Alton-Wood River in Class 1A Greenville Regional semifinals at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
LITCHFIELD 4, ROXANA 2 – The Shells wrapped up their regular season at 2-17 overall and 2-7 in South Central Conference play with a loss to the Purple Panthers on Thursday at Litchfield.
Tyler Svoboda and Jordan Katzmarek scored goals for Roxana, which will play Greenville in a Class 1A Greenville Regional first-round game at 4 today.
FIELD HOCKEY
LADUE 2, EDWARDSVILLE 1 – The Tigers dropped to 10-7-1 with a loss to the Rams in the Gold Bracket semifinals on the Public School Tournament on Thursday at Edwardsville.
Edwardsville will play Kirkwood at 9 a.m. Saturday in the third-place match.
