ALTON 11, GRANITE CITY 1 — The 19-7 Redbirds won their fourth in succession by rolling past the Warriors in a seven-inning Southwestern Conference game. Alton, which improved to 6-3 in the league, defeated visiting Granite City for the second time this season. The Warriors fell to 4-22 overall and 2-7. They have dropped 6 of their last 7 games.
Freshman Robbie Taul went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs to pace the Redbirds, who led 6-0 after the second inning. Teammate Aaron Bonnell was 2-for-2 with a double and he also drove in a run. Starting pitcher Charlie Erler worked the first two innings and logged the win.
Austin Bonvinco was 1-for-2 with a double for the Warriors. They had three hits against a trio of Alton pitchers.
EDWARDSVILLE 5, BELLEVILLE WEST 3 — The 20-4 Tigers reached the 20-win plateau for the 37th consecutive season by defeating the visiting Maroons at Tom Pile Field. Edwardsville, winning its seventh in succession, improved to 8-2 in the SWC. O’Fallon is 8-1 and sitting atop the league standings.
Andrew Yancik hiked his record to 5-0 in getting the win in relief of starter Trey Riley. Yancik and Riley teamed for a 2-hitter and 13 strikeouts. Jake Garella’s RBI single in the fifth snapped a 3-3 tie and sent the Tigers to another win. He was 2-for-3 against West.
ALTON 9, GRANITE CITY 2 — Bronte Fencel and Tami Wong did the heavy hitting as the Redbirds walloped the Warriors at Wilson Park.
Fencel went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs and Wong was 2-for-4 and had two RBIs to back winning pitcher Brittany Roady. She gave up four hits and no earned runs. Roady struck out 14 and walked one.
A four-run third enabled the Birds to build a 5-2 advantage and improve to 15-4 overall and 7-2 in the SWC. Granite City sank to 8-14 and 3-5.
EDWARDSVILLE 19, BELLEVILLE WEST 4 — Sarah Hangsleben hit a pair of home runs as the 19-3 Tigers romped by the host Maroons in SWC play. Edwardsville has won four in a row and 15 of its last 16 games. The Tigers shot to 9-0 in the conference.
They erupted for 17 runs over the final four innings to turn it into a lopsided game. Hangsleben went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs. She has hit nine home runs thus this season. Hangsleben belted two home runs earlier this season in a 22-13 win over West.
Teammate Anna Burke collected three hits to also back winning pitcher Jordan Garella, now 15-1.
MASCOUTAH 4, CM 3 — Visiting Mascoutah scored twice in the sixth inning to shade the Eagles in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest. CM was outhit 9-6 and the Eagles also made three errors.
Katelyn Turbyfill tried spurring CM. She went 3-for-4. Teammate Shelby Whaley added two hits to support losing pitcher Ryan Allison. The Eagles dropped to 9-9 overall and 1-4 in the Valley.
STAUNTON 5, ROXANA 4 — Host Staunton edged Roxana and handed the 9-19 Shells their 10th consecutive defeat. The Shells fell to 3-5 South Central Conference with the loss.
They scored four times in the third to build a 4-0 lead, but the 17-4 Bulldogs rallied for the victory.
Marcy McCalla paced the winners by going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
EA-WR 3, JERSEY 1 — A pair of second-half goals shot the Oilers past the host Panthers in a nonconference match.
Kara Crutchley tallied twice and had an assist for EA-WR. Adelyn Bentley also supplied a goal, while Brittany Grayson logged an assist. The Oilers improved to 3-12-1. Hailea Tepen scored for the Panthers, who sank to 3-13.
ROXANA 3, STAUNTON 0 — Emma Lucas scored twice and Brittany Alexander provided a goal as the Shells blanked host Staunton in SCC action. Both of Lucas’ goals came in the first half.
The Shells lifted their overall record to 10-4-2. They are 5-3 in the league.
Mykala Rosales added an assist for the Shells. Goalie Braeden Lacey made 14 saves to get her fifth shutout.
BELLEVILLE EAST 7, ALTON 2 — Adam Kane and Ben Simansky of host Alton scored singles wins, but the Lancers bagged a SWC victory. Belleville East won four singles matches and swept the three doubles bouts.
The Redbirds fell to 14-7 overall and 3-3 in the league.
O’FALLON 2, ALTON 0 — The Redbirds suffered a two-game defeat to the host Panthers in SWC competition. O’Fallon prevailed, 25-13 and 25-7, in pushing the Birds to 0-8.
