GRANITE CITY 2, ALTON 1 — Host Granite City scored a narrow victory over Alton in Southwestern Conference action in Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday.
The Redbirds won the first game, 25-23, but the Warriors bounced back to prevail, 25-20 in the second one and 25-21 in the decisive third game.
Granite City improved to 6-11 overall and 4-8 in the SWC. It was the Warriors second win over the Redbirds this season. Alton fell to 2-15 and 0-12.
Both teams are cast in the Metro East Lutheran Regional and they will play each other at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 23, in Thomas Hooks Gym. The Warriors are seeded seventh and the Redbirds are rated eighth.
BELLEVILLE WEST 2, EDWARDSVILLE 1 — The Maroons topped the host Tigers in the final SWC match for both teams. Belleville West won the first game, 25-20. Then Edwardsville scored a 28-26 victory in the second game before West claimed a 25-16 win in the third one.
The Maroons defeated the Tigers for the third time in five matches this season, including a pair of conference contests. West hiked its overall record to 20-14-1 and closed 9-3 in the SWC. Edwardsville dropped to 18-13 overall and finished 7-5 in the league.
Nick Allen collected 15 kills, 11 service points and 4 aces to pace the Tigers. Teammate Mike Horton supplied nine kills, while Tommy Hartnagel had eight kills. Ben Lombardi directed the offense with 32 assists.
Next up for the Tigers is postseason play. They will face Metro East Lutheran in the Knights’ Regional at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24 in Thomas Hooks Gym.
CHATHAM GLENWOOD 7, CM 0 — The Eagles saw their season come to an end Tuesday in the Class 2A Chatham Glenwood Regional.
CM dropped four of its final five contests and finished with a 6-10-4 record.
Rochester blasted Jersey 9-0 in the other regional semifinal game in Chatham on Tuesday. Glenwood and Rochester now meet at 6 p.m. Friday in the regional title tilt.
