ROXANA 5, MELHS 0 — The Roxana Shells opened the 2016 season with a 5-0 win over Metro East Lutheran on Monday at the Wood River Soccer Park.
Roxana led 1-0 after one half and tacked on four more goals in the second half.
Abby Kurth scored a hat trick in the win for the Shells. Mykala Rosales and Emma Miller also tallied goals. Kara Meyer picked up two assists, while Brittany Alexander, Haley Milazzo and Sydney Martin each dished out one assist.
Braeden Lackey patrolled the goal for Roxana, while Kori Stegall worked the net for the Knights, logging 15 saves. The Shells outshot MELHS 30-0.
Roxana returns to action at 4 p.m. today, playing host to local rival Civic Memorial. The Knights sit idle until 4:30 p.m. March 21 when they hit the road at Hillsboro.
ALTON 2, FREEBURG 1 — The Alton Redbirds opened their season and the Metro Cup with a 2-1 victory over Freeburg on Monday in Columbia.
The halftime score was the same as the final, as the game was held scoreless in the second half.
Katie Kercher of the Redbirds scored their first goal, while Lexi Schrimpf busted a 1-1 tie with the game-winner for the Birds.
