ROXANA GETS BY GREENVILLE, WILL PLAY FOR FIFTH IN LITCHFIELD — The Roxana Shells were able to avenge a loss to the Greenville Comets from earlier in the season on Thursday.
The Shells topped the Comets 48-43 at the Litchfield Invitational to earn a date with Nokomis at 4 p.m. Saturday for fifth place.
Roxana had lost at Greenville, 57-51, on Jan. 8. The win lifted the Shells to 13-7 on the season.
They led 12-8 after one quarter and were tied 22-22 at halftime before falling behind 33-31 after three quarters to the Comets on Thursday. Roxana then outscored Greenville 17-10 in the final quarter to pull out the win.
Trace Gentry led the attack for the Shells with 18 points. Zach Golenor joined him in double figures with 10 points, while Blake Vandiver punched in 9 in the triumph.
EA-WR FALLS TO HILLSBORO — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers fell to Hillsboro 62-49 Thursday at the Litchfield Invite.
The loss sank the Oilers to 5-15 on the season. They battle Lebanon at 6 p.m. tonight in their final game at Litchfield.
CM WINS BATTLE OF THE EAGLES WITH COLUMBIA — The Civic Memorial Eagles traveled to Columbia on Thursday and soared to victory, 57-28.
With the win, CM elevated to 13-8 on the season.
The Eagles led 17-10 after one quarter and stretched their advantage to 31-15 at the break. They led 43-19 after three quarters on their way to victory.
Allie Troeckler poured in a game-high 27 points. Kaylee Eaton of CM supported her with 8 points, while Kalyn Troxell, Katelyn Turbyfill and Journey Coffman each had 6 points. Troxell also yanked down 8 rebounds.
Next up for the Eagles is the host Carrollton Hawks at the Carrollton Invite at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The tournament continues through the week and concludes on Jan. 30.
ALTON SUFFERS SWC SETBACK TO EAST SIDE — The Alton Redbirds suffered a lopsided loss to the East St. Louis Flyerettes on Thursday in Southwestern Conference action at AHS.
The loss saw the Birds slip to 3-16 overall and 0-11 in league action.
LaJarvia Brown paced the Redbirds with 6 points. East Side had four players reach double digit scoring.
Alton is back on the court at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, playing host to the O'Fallon Panthers in a SWC affair.
EA-WR FALLS TO LITCHFIELD — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers were tripped up by the Litchfield Purple Panthers 36-11 Thursday at Memorial Gym in Wood River.
The Oilers plummeted to 1-19 with the loss.
Four EA-WR players contributed to the offense. Carly Campbell scored a team-high 4 points, while Courtney Beneke netted 3 points and Becca Renken and Anna Stangle each chipped in with 2 points.
The Oilers are idle until 7:30 p.m. Monday when they play host to Bunker Hill in Prairie State Conference action.
CM SWEPT BY HIGHLAND — The Civic Memorial Eagles took on the Highland Bulldogs in a Mississippi Valley Conference dual on Thursday and unfortunately came away with a pair of losses.
The Bulldogs topped the Eagles 3,002 to 2,906 on the boys' side and 2,871 to 2,077 on the girls' front.
CM was paced by Devin Davis with a 702 series for the boys. Ashley Westbrook supplied the high mark for the Eagle ladies with a 506 series.
ROXANA'S ETHAN ARNOLD ADDED TO SECTIONAL FIELD — Roxana's Ethan Arnold has been added to the field at the Cahokia Sectional on Saturday.
Arnold finished 11th individually at the Taylorville Regional with a 1,087 series. The top 10 individuals on a non-advancing team qualify for sectionals, but when one of the top 10 bowlers was unable to play at the sectional, Arnold earned the nod as an alternate. The move was made official on Thursday.
