SHELLS GROUND METEORS — Roxana opened the 2015-16 season in fine fashion Tuesday at the Metro East Lutheran Turkey Tip-Off Tournament, besting the Marissa Meteors 51-44 in pool play.
The Shells, the top seed in Pool D, trailed 23-22 entering the break against Marissa, but outscored the Meteors 29-21 in the second half to secure the victory.
Trace Gentry paced Roxana with 14 points and 9 rebounds in the win. Zach Golenor complemented him with 11 points, while Cody McMillen had 9 points and 7 rebounds and Blake Vandiver chipped in with 7 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Marissa's Tony Stoddard led all scorers with 17 points.
For the game the Shells shot just 33 percent (17 of 51) as a team.
The big test for Roxana comes at 7 p.m. tonight against Southwestern to close out pool play. The winner will advance to the championship bracket of the Turkey Tip-Off beginning on Friday.
GRANITE CITY LOSES CLOSE GAME TO TAYLORVILLE — The Stove Top Stuffing Tournament continued on Tuesday, with the Granite City Warriors falling to Taylorville 48-46.
A day after topping Triad in overtime, the Warriors couldn't get over the hump against Taylorville, slipping to 1-1 on the young season.
GCHS led 27-19 after the first quarter and entered the break with the same lead after a scoreless second quarter. The Tornadoes charged back in the second half, outscoring the Warriors 29-19 to secure the win.
Granite City's Kenny Berry led all scorers with 20 points. Ron Allen and Tra'ron Allen netted 9 and 8 points for good measure in the loss. Taylorville's Lane Ruppert scored 19 and Jimmy Barry chipped in with 12 to steer the Tornadoes.
The Warriors are at Nokomis at 7:30 p.m. tonight continuing tournament play.
EA-WR FALLS TO FREEBURG — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers wrapped up pool play at the MELHS Turkey Tip-Off Tournament Tuesday, falling to Freeburg 60-40.
The Oilers are 0-2 in Pool E and will square off with Marissa at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the bronze bracket of the Turkey Tip-Off.
Zane Butkovich and Justin Englar stirred the EA-WR offense on Tuesday, netting 10 points apiece. Senior Blake Marks added to the cause with 7 points, while Zaide Wilson chipped in with 4.
The Oilers trailed just 7-4 after the opening quarter, but found themselves behind 29-14 entering the break. After keeping even in the third quarter, 16-16, EA-WR was outscored 15-10 over the final 8 minutes of the contest.
EXPLORERS STUMBLE AGAINST MINERS — The Marquette Catholic Explorers took a trip to Gillespie on Tuesday and came away with a 54-45 loss.
The Explorers slipped to 2-3 on the season with the loss.
Senior guard Caitlyn Hanlon directed the offense with 21 points, while also picking up 4 steals. Andria Pace also scored in double digits with 10 points.
Next up for Marquette is a matchup with powerhouse Incarnate Word Academy at the Ursuline Shootout at 5 p.m. Saturday.
