SHELLS DOUBLE UP BULLDOGS — The Roxana Shells had little issue with the Staunton Bulldogs Monday on the road, winning the South Central Conference matchup 46-23.
The win pushed the Shells to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the SCC.
They led 14-7 after the opening frame and carried a 22-14 lead into the locker room. Roxana then cruised in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 24-9 to lockdown the win.
Sara Kreutztrager and Abby Palen stirred the attack with 13 points apiece, while Hannah Rexford pitched in with 12 points.
The Shells are idle until 7:30 p.m. Thursday when they battle Litchfield in SCC play at Larry Milazzo Gym.
EA-WR FALLS TO MADISON — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers welcomed the Madison Trojans to Memorial Gym on Monday, but came up a little short, losing 42-34 in the non-conference affair.
The Oilers dipped to 2-6 on the season with the loss.
They were in front 8-6 after one quarter, but trailed 23-11 at halftime and 29-23 after three quarters on the way to the losing effort.
Courtney Beneke guided the EA-WR offense with 15 points. She was the only Oiler in double figures. Becca Renken chipped in with 6 points and Abbie Cathey netted 5 to complement Beneke.
The Oilers return to action at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olive for Prairie State Conference play.
HILLSBORO TOO MUCH FOR EXPLORERS — The Marquette Catholic Explorers ran into a buzz saw in the Hillsboro Hiltoppers on the road Monday, falling 69-27.
With the loss, Marquette sank to 2-8 on the season. It was the sixth consecutive loss for the struggling Explorers.
Marquette next plays host to Jersey at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
REDBIRDS SPLIT WITH PIASA BIRDS — The Alton Redbirds split with the Southwestern Piasa Birds Monday at home, winning on the girls' side, but falling in the boys' competition.
The AHS girls prevailed 2,598-2,066. Eryka Graham paced the Birds with a 593 series. Ashley Heistand was right on her heels with a 586 series. Claire Gorman also eclipsed 500, with a 501 series.
On the boys' side, the Redbirds stumbled 2,857-2,708 to Southwestern. Matt Fritz led the way for Alton with a 611 series. Tyler Stevenson complemented him with a 595 series.
AHS is back on the lanes at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday when it battles Edwardsville in Southwestern Conference action.
EA-WR GETS BY COLLINSVILLE — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers got by the Collinsville Kahoks, 5-4, on Monday at the Granite City Ice Rink.
A scoreless first period left the Oilers and Kahoks at a stalemate, but EA-WR erupted for four goals in the second period and owned a 4-2 lead entering the third period. It was enough to hold up for the win, as the Oilers were outscored 2-1 in the third period.
Kaleb Harrop had a pair of goals, while Cole Ford logged a goal and two assists to lead the way. Bryce Bazzell also scored a goal and Nolan Royse notched an assist in the victory. The Oilers are now 2-7 on the season following the win.
Next up for EA-WR is a 7:15 p.m. match tonight vs. Belleville at the East Alton Ice Arena.
BETHALTO GETS BLANKED BY O'FALLON — The O'Fallon Panthers gave the Bethalto Eagles fits on Monday, as the Eagles were blanked 8-0 at the East Alton Ice Arena.
O'Fallon led 3-0 after one period, 6-0 after two and tacked on two insurance tallies in the third period.
The Eagles dropped to 4-5 with the loss, while the Panthers improved to 5-3-2.
Bethalto remains idle until 7:15 p.m. Dec. 14 when it faces Triad in East Alton.
