SHELLS TOP MINUTEMAIDS — Roxana came from behind to defeat host Bunker Hill in a three-game nonconference match Tuesday at Hlafka Hall.
The Minutemaids won the opening game, 25-20, then the Shells responded with a pair of 25-20 victories.
Niah Bevolo and Kara Meyer led the way for Roxana. Bevolo collected eight assists, three kills, five service points and two digs. Meyer added eight kills, eight points, seven assists and two aces.
Taylor Jackson (eight points, two kills, two digs and two aces), Brittany Alexander (eight kills, four points, four digs and one kill) and Braeden Lacey (seven points, five digs, four kills and three aces) also contributed plenty to the cause. Jordan DiPaolo pitched in four kills.
The Shells improved to 5-3 with the victory. They resume South Central Conference action Thursday when they welcome Greenville. Roxana then will compete this weekend in the Redbirds Invitational at AHS.
EXPLORERS BOW TO HILTOPPERS — Visiting Hillsboro scored a nonconference win over Marquette Catholic.
The Explorers won the first game, 25-21. The Hiltoppers won the second one, 25-22 and the decisive third game, 25-18.
Brittany Pace had nine blocks, four kills and two aces for Marquette. Marissa Nosco came through with 16 assists, nine digs and two aces. Michelle Cameron chipped in 11 blocks, while Laura Hamilton logged nine digs.
Marquette, now 4-5, is scheduled to entertain Jersey on Wednesday. The Explorers then will participate in its shared tournament with East Alton-Wood River on Saturday.
