ROXANA WINS BACKYARD BATTLE WITH EAGLES — The Roxana Shells welcomed the Civic Memorial Eagles to Larry Milazzo Gymnasium for a wrestling dual on Wednesday, prevailing 42-21.
CM was able to nab wins via pin by Zach Wells (106), Eian McIntire (152) and Brandon Carpenter (182), while Jordan Stagner logged a 7-4 decision over Brett Nyswonger at 220.
Freshman Drew Huff was able to pick up a pin at 170 for the Shells.
Unfortunately due to low numbers for the Eagles, Roxana picked up six forfeit victories. There were three double forfeits in the dual also.
As both squads look forward to regionals on Feb. 6, they enter the home stretch of the regular season. CM is at the Edwardsville Quad at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jon Davis Wrestling Center, while the Shells are idle until 6 p.m. Wednesday when they welcome Collinsville for a middle school/high school dual and then head to Alton at 7 p.m. Jan. 28.
ALTON TOPS QUINCY, FALLS TO TRIAD — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Triad for a triangular meet on Wednesday, escaping with a split.
The Birds toppled the Quincy Blue Devils 43-18, but fell to the host Knights 36-33. They are now 11-4 overall in dual meets on the season. Alton head coach Eric Roberson now sits at 299 career wins.
The Redbirds return to Southwestern Conference action at 7 p.m. tonight at O'Fallon and head to Belleville East for a quadrangular at 9 a.m. Saturday with the host Lancers, Jersey and Cahokia.
COLLINSVILLE EDGES MARQUETTE AT JERSEY — The Marquette Catholic Explorers continued their journey through the rugged field at the Mid Winter Classic in Jerseyville on Wednesday.
The Explorers fell 39-32 to the Collinsville Kahoks at Jersey High on Wednesday. Marquette is now 12-5 on the season, while the Kahoks are 8-9. It was the second straight loss for the Explorers.
Marquette trailed 9-8 after one quarter, 22-21 at half and 31-30 after three frames, Collinsville outscored the Explorers 8-2 over the final 8 minutes to eke out the win.
Marquette's Ben Sebacher led all scorers with 12 points. Reagan Snider complemented him on the Explorers with 10 points.
The Kahoks got 11 points from Zach Flora and 10 from Tommy Maden to pace their attack in the low-scoring affair.
Marquette returns to action at 5 p.m. Friday in Jerseyville against Cahokia.
