CLASS 3A PEKIN SECTIONAL – For the second straight year and for the third time in four years, the Edwardsville Tigers will be playing in the Class 3A state championship tournament.
Edwardsville clinched a state tournament berth by placing second with a four-player score of 307 in the Class 3A Pekin Sectional tournament on Monday at Lick Creek Golf Course.
Providence Catholic won the sectional title with a 304. Quincy also earned a state berth after placing third with a 315. The top three teams in a sectional qualify for state.
Edwardsville will compete in the Class 3A state tournament, which starts on Friday at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Course. The Tigers qualified for sectionals by winning the Class 3A Quincy Regional on Oct. 4.
Ben Tyrrell and Tanner White finished in a tie for third with two other golfers with a 75. Luke Babington finished in a three-way tie for seventh with a 76.
Also for the Tigers, Spencer Patterson fired an 81, Jon Ratteman shot an 85 and Blake Burris finished with an 88.
Granite City's Riley Brown and Alton's Dalton Lahue had their seasons come to an end at sectionals on Monday. Brown shot a 92 and Lahue finished with a 103.
Normal's Rob Wuetrich won the sectional title with a 71. Providence Catholic's Michael Cascino finished second with a 74.
CLASS A SALEM SECTIONAL – For the second straight year, a Roxana golfer will be competing in the Class 1A state girls’ golf tournament.
Junior Bailey Sharpmack will be the Shells’ lone representative at the state tournament this weekend at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur after shooting an 85 in the sectional tournament on Monday at Salem Country Club. It will be Sharpmack’s first trip to state.
Andrea Mellenthin qualified for state as a senior for Roxana last fall.
Sharpmack qualified for sectionals by winning the Class 1A Marquette Catholic regional title with an 80 on Oct. 5.
Marquette Catholic, which won the team regional title, finished eighth with a 378 at the Salem Sectional. The Explorers didn’t have any individuals qualify for state.
Nashville won the sectional title with a 332. Massac County’s Millie Lawson earned medalist honors with a 76.
ROXANA 7, METRO EAST LUTHERAN 2 – The Shells finished their dual-match season at 12-3 with a win over the Knights in a road match on Monday.
Sydney Owsley, Haley Milazzo and Sara Kreutzrager won singles matches and the doubles teams of Milazzo/Kreutzrager and Anna-Marie Bailey/Delaney Tyler picked up victories for Roxana, which will compete in the Class A Triad Sectional on Friday.
The Shells also had wins over Vandalia, Mascoutah, Civic Memorial, Marquette, EA-WR, Granite City, Hillsboro, Collinsville, Greenville this season.
JERSEY 3, CIVIC MEMORIAL 2 – The Eagles finished their regular season at 7-10-1 overall and 0-9-1 in Mississippi Valley Conference play after losing 3-2 to the Panthers on Monday at Jerseyville.
CM led 2-1 at halftime. Mikey Stevenson and Keante Hardimon scored goals and Hardimon and Kameron Denney each had an assist for the Eagles, who have surpassed their win total of two from last year.
CM’s next game will be at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 18 against Jacksonville in the Class 2A Jacksonville Regional semifinals.
