SHELLS SHINE AT SCC TOURNAMENT – Andrea Mellenthin and Bailey Sharpmack led the way for Roxana at the South Central Conference Tournament on the Litchfield Country Club Course.
Both of them shot scores of 85 to share medalist honors with Lindsey Storm of Hillsboro. Ali Hurley of Carlinville finished fourth with a 92.
Hillsboro carded a score of 388 for team honors. Greenville placed second with a 404 and Roxana took third at 407. Pana (416), Staunton (417), Litchfield (418) and Carlinville (435) rounded out the scoring.
Roxana will compete in the Class 1A Roxana Regional on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the Belk Park Course in Wood River.
TIGERS WIN SWC TITLE – It’s five consecutive Southwestern Conference titles for Edwardsville, which prevailed in the latest league competition at the Stonewolf Course in Fairview Heights.
The Tigers recorded a 303 score to finish 25 strokes ahead of runner-up O’Fallon. Edwardsville thus secured its 15th conference championship in the last 16 years. The Tigers also finished 6-0 in SWC dual competition.
Alton finished sixth with a 362 score. Belleville East, third at 336, Belleville West, fourth at 348; Collinsville, fifth at 354; Granite City, seventh at 369 and East St. Louis, last at 527; rounded out the scoring.
Tanner White, a sophomore from Edwardsville, shot a 2-under par 70 for medalist honors. Teammate Justin Hemings was runner-up with 76. All figured, the Tigers had four players shoot in the 70s.
The Redbirds got scoring from: Max Hunter (81), Ryan Boyd (90), Sam Ballard (94) and Austin Erthal (97).
OILERS WIN BIG – East Alton-Wood River blanked visiting North County Tech of St. Louis, 5-0, in a nonconference match.
David Barrett scored twice, while Luke Sims, Josh Turner and Vince Baldaino tallied goals for the winners. Goalie Nick Barrett made one save in registering the shutout.
The Oilers, who improved to 11-3-1, are scheduled to play Wednesday at Hillsboro. They have won four in a row.
EXPLORERS LOG SHUTOUT – Marquette blanked Father McGivney, 4-0, in a nonconference match at Moore Park.
Noah Fahnestock, Zach Weinman, Chris Hartrich and Adam Hammond got the goals for the Explorers, who had 12 shots on goal. Hartrich, Weinman, Collin Dunn and Jon Stewart notched assists.
Goalie Brandon Sanfilippo played the entire way and had eight saves in getting a shutout. Marquette, now 7-5-3, plays an 11 a.m. match Saturday at Metro East Lutheran in Edwardsville.
KAHOKS EDGE WARRIORS – Collinsville snared a 2-1 double overtime victory over Granite City in a key SWC match. Nick Suria and Logan Whitehead score for the Kahoks. Sam Ortiz tallied the Warriors’ lone goal.
The winners improved to 11-2-1. The Warriors dropped to 2-9-3.
SHELLS FALL TO PANTHERS – Host Pana slipped past Roxana, 2-1, in a match involving the SCC rivals. The Shells saw their record drop to 5-7-1.
BULLDOGS BLAST EAGLES – Host Highland rolled by CM, 6-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match. The Bulldogs improved to 6-7 in downing the Eagles the second time this season. Highland won the first meeting, 9-0.
CM, which fell to 2-12 and 0-7, welcomes Waterloo on Thursday in another Valley affair.
REDBIRDS, TIGERS PLAY THURSDAY – Alton and Edwardsville, which were rained out of their SWC match Tuesday at Moore Park, will clash at 6:30 Thursday at the same site. The Redbirds are 8-4-2, while the Tigers are 9-1-3. Edwardsville won at Alton, 3-0, on Aug. 29 in the Birds’ tourney.
EXPLORERS PREVAIL – Marquette downed host Mount Olive in a two-game Prairie State Conference match. The Explorers won 25-18, 25-18 to improve to 3-0 in league competition. Mount Olive is 12-3.
Brittany Pace provided seven service points, six blocks and three kills to back the 12-7 Explorers. Andria Pace collected 10 service points, including three aces. She also had four kills and two blocks.
Kate Cogan (six kills), Anna Daugherty (five kills), Laura Hamilton (14 digs), Carly Vitals (11 digs), Michelle Cameron (six service points, four blocks and three kills) and Marissa Nosco (20 assists and five service points) added to the victory.
REDBIRDS RIP RIVERVIEW – The Redbirds won again by defeating host Riverview Gardens, Mo., 25-5, 25-10 in a nonconference match. Alton, which improved to 19-4-1, is scheduled to play Thursday at Hazelwood Central.
The Birds won a school-record 25 matches last season and had 21 victories in 2012. They also amassed 24 wins in 2008.
SHELLS BOW TO PIASA BIRDS – Visiting Southwestern best Roxana, 25-23 and 25-14 in SCC play at Larry Milazzo Gym. The Shells dropped to 7-12 overall and 2-4 in the league.
Taylor Westfall (17 digs and five kills), Braeden Lackey (seven points, seven digs and two aces), Niah Bevolo (seven assists and four digs), Abby Palen (three digs, two kills and one block) were among the Shells’ leaders.
MARQUETTE ROMPS PAST GREENVILLE — The Marquette Catholic Explorers ran past Greenville on the road Tuesday, 8-1.
The Explorers improved to 11-3 overall on the season with the win, while the Comets dipped to 6-7.
Singles winners were: Shelby Jones, Adri Ventigmlia, Anne Tassinari, Maddie Joehl and Katie Ventigmlia. In doubles the teams of Elena Gable and Laura Moore, Tassinari and Alison Hoefert and Joehl Katie Ventigmlia prevailed.
Marquette plays host to Belleville West at 4 p.m. today.
SHELLS TOP PANTHERS – Host Roxana defeated Jersey in a suspended match that will be completed later in the week.
The Shells led 8-0, winning all six singles matches and two doubles bouts. The third doubles match is scheduled to be completed Thursday afternoon. Jersey leads it 4-3.
