EXPLORERS KEEP ROLLING — Marquette Catholic won its third in succession and sixth of seven by blasting host Roxana, 7-0, at Wood River Soccer and Skate Park on Tuesday.
Chris Hartrich paced the high-octane attack. He scored three goals. Teammate Zach Weinman added two goals and two assists. Jacob File and Adam Hammond both punched in a goal and Collin Dunn supplied two assists.
Goalie Brandon Sanfilippo made six saves in logging the shutout. The Explorers, who improved to 9-5-3, are scheduled to play East Alton-Wood River at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Soccer Park. Marquette will welcome Civic Memorial at 4:15 on Oct. 13 at Gordon Moore Park.
The Shells, falling to 6-12-1, have dropped four in a row. They are slated to entertain Litchfield on Thursday in a South Central Conference match at 4:30 p.m.
REDBIRDS BOW TO WEST — Host Belleville West pounded Alton, 5-0, in a Southwestern Conference match Tuesday.
The 9-6-3 Redbirds fell to 1-2-1 in league play. They play host to Columbia on Thursday in a nonconference contest and then welcome O’Fallon on Oct. 13 in SWC action.
KNIGHTS DOWN EAGLES — Civic Memorial slipped to 2-14 overall after losing to Triad, 3-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match. The Eagles have lost three consecutive matches and 12 of their last 13 matches.
CM, 0-9 in the Valley, is slated to close its conference action Thursday at Mascoutah.
WARRIORS FALL TO LANCERS — Visiting Granite City suffered a 1-0 setback to Belleville East in SWC play. The Warriors dropped to 3-12-3 overall and 0-4-1 in conference competition. Granite City is idle until Wednesday, Oct. 14, when the Warriors go to Jersey High.
WARRIORS QUALIFY TRIO — Gavin Grote, David Keel and Riley Brown of Granite City advanced through the Class 3A Edwardsville Sectional at Oak Brook Golf Course. They will compete in next Monday’s Alton Sectional at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course.
Grote shot a 78, Keel carded a 79 and Brown had an 84 to join seven other individual sectional qualifiers. No Alton Redbirds advanced to a sectional for the first time since 2007.
Max Hunter (86), Sam Ballard (87) and Ryan Boyd (93) led Alton. The Redbirds shot a 371 score to finish eighth among nine teams. Granite City was sixth at 330.
Host Edwardsville recorded an impressive 289 total to win it. Quincy placed second at 307 and O’Fallon took third at 316.
Justin Hemings, an Edwardsville senior, recorded a 4-under par 67 to earn medalist honors for the second straight season. He finished three shots ahead of Belleville West’s David Crosby, a sectional individual qualifier.
EXPLORERS TOP TRIAD — Marquette Catholic scored a 5-4 win over host Triad in a nonconference thriller at Triad High on Tuesday.
The win elevated the Explorers’ record to 15-3. They conclude their regular-season schedule Wednesday at Belleville East.
Elena Gable, Laura Moore, Abby Simonds and Anne Tassinari logged singles wins for the Explorers. Shelby Jones and Tassinari prevailed in doubles.
BULLDOGS EDGE EAGLES — Host Civic Memorial pushed Waterloo to the limit, but fell 25-23, 25-21 in Mississippi Valley Conference action Thursday.
The Eagles, bowing for the fifth consecutive match, dropped to 7-10-3 overall and 0-7 in the MVC.
Kennedy Carnes (six kills and five blocks), Sydney Marshall (15 assists) and Cara Melton (nine digs) led the way for CM, which nearly overcame a 19-9 deficit in the first game.
Waterloo improved to 11-7 and 6-1.
The Eagles resume play Thursday at Metro East Lutheran in a nonconference match.
PIRATES SHADE EXPLORERS – Host Valmeyer recorded a 25-23, 25-10 victory over Marquette in nonconference competition Thursday.
The Explorers fell to 13-9 with the loss.
Marissa Nosco (12 assists), Laura Hamilton (10 digs), Michelle Cameron (four blocks and four kills), Brittany Pace (six kills), Kate Cogan (eight digs) and Anna Daugherty (four kills) led the Explorers.
Marquette goes to Roxana on Thursday in a local rivalry match.
