TWIN CITY GOES UNDEFEATED IN POOL PLAY — Twin City closed out pool play with a 7-0 win over the St. Louis Redbirds on Saturday morning.
Twin City remains alive in the All American Classic and improved to 17-1 with the win. South Roxana Post 1167 is back in action at 10 a.m. Sunday as the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
Blake Marks picked up the win on the mound in the win over the Redbirds. Marks tossed six innings, fanning four and scattering six hits.
Marks helped lead the way offensively too, going 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a double. Andrew Fry also picked up two hits, including a double to go with a RBI and a stolen base.
Twin City is back in action at Heine Meine Field in St. Louis on Sunday.
BEARS FINISH 3-1 IN TOURNEY — The Metro East Bears won two games Saturday in the fourth annual Southwest Illinois American Legion Firecracker Baseball Tournament.
However, the 16-5 Bears, who finished 3-1 in Pool A of the tourney at Moore Park in Alton, didn't advance to Sunday's semifinals. Mount Vernon, the Pool A champion, faces Pool B winner Evansville. Ind., at 11 a.m. Sunday at Longacre Park in Fairview Heights. Then Pool C champ Bryant, Ark., clashes with wild card representative Texarkana, Ark., at 1 p.m. Bryant is the three-time defending champion.
Sunday's championship game is tentatively slated for 3 p.m. at Longacre Park.
Evansville went 3-1 in Pool B and Bryant logged a 4-0 mark in Pool C. Texarkana posted a 3-1 record in Pool B and edged the Metro East Bears by a run differential factor for the wild card slot. Texarkana, which lost to Evansville, allowed seven runs in four tourney games and the Bears yielded nine runs.
On Saturday, the Bears blanked Columbia, Mo., 9-0 in six innings and Fulton, Mo., 6-4. Anthony Kindle pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game and Metro East broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth for its victory in the second game.
Mount Vernon, 3-1 in the Pool A, emerged with the championship thanks to its 4-3 win over Metro East on Friday night. Mount Vernon, which has a overall record of 7-5, lost to Fulton, Mo., 3-2 on Saturday. Jerseyville and Fulton both went 2-2 in Pool A, while Columbia, Mo., finished 0-4. Jerseyville is 6-7 overall and is back in action next weekend.
Metro East resumes District 22 play Monday when it welcomes Fairview Heights at 7:30. The Bears are at Highland on Tuesday and then go to Fariview Heights on Thursday, July 9, to conclude its league schedule.
