GRANITE CITY DEF. MADISON 25-12, 25-15 – The Warriors ended their regular season on a high note on Monday.
Granite City defeated crosstown rival Madison in two games to finish 14-14-1, making it the first time in 13 years the Warriors finished with a .500 regular season. In 2003, the Warriors finished 14-14 in the regular season and went on to finish 15-15 after beating Taylorville in a first-round match and losing to East St. Louis in the semifinals of the Class AA Triad Regional.
Granite City hasn't had a winning season since 2002, when it finished 18-14.
The Warriors also doubled their win total of seven from last year. After being 6-11-1 on Sept. 26, Granite City won eight of its next 11 matches.
The Warriors will return to action at 5:30 p.m. On Oct. 24, when they play the Collinsville Kahoks in a Class 4A O'Fallon Regional first-round match. Granite City lost to Collinsville in two games in a Southwestern Conference match at Collinsville on Sept. 8.
SOUTH CENTRAL CONFERENCE MEET – The Roxana Shells placed third in the girls' race with 74 points and fourth in the boys' race with 91 in the South Central Conference meet on Monday at Schneider Park in Brighton.
Sophomore Michaela Tarpley was the lone Roxana runner who earned all-conference honors. She placed seventh with a time of 22 minutes, 24 seconds.
Also in the girls' race, Lette Palen finished 15th with a 24:11, sophomore Jaidyn Peebles placed 16th with a 24:46, freshman Meg Bosse was 23rd with a 25:23 and sophomore Victoria Tarpley finished 24th with a 25:38.
Nathan Lowe was the Shells' top finisher in the boys' race, placing 12th with a 20:22. Gage Robinette was 14th with a 20:28, Joel Woodruff placed 17th with a 21:05, Douglas Johnson was 23rd with a 21:30. and Devin Thomeczek finished 29th with a 21:48.
Carlinville won the boys' title with 22 points and Litchfield won the girls' championship with 22 points. Pana's Claudia Magnussen placed first in the girls' race and Greenville's Collin Kessinger won the boys' race.
Roxana will compete in the Class 1A Freeburg Regional meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at Smithton Community Park.
