CLASS 2A MATTOON SECTIONAL — For the second straight year, the Marquette Catholic Explorers will be competing in the Class 2A state boys’ golf tournament.
The Explorers punched their ticket to state after winning the Class 2A Mattoon Sectional championship on Tuesday at Mattoon Country Club. Marquette shot a 310 to win its first sectional title since 2002, when it qualified for state for the first time in program history.
The Explorers won the sectional tournament by 22 strokes over Benton, which finished with a 332. Mattoon placed third with a 345.
Michael Holtz earned medalist honors with a 72. Nick Messinger fired a 76, Jack Patterson shot a 79, Kolten Bauer finished with an 83 to score for the team. Duncan McLain had a 91 and Sam Cogan had a 105 to round out the lineup.
Marquette, which finished seventh in last year’s state tournament, qualified for sectionals by winning the Class 2A Roxana Regional title last week at Belk Park.
Joining the Explorers at the state tournament at Weibring Golf Course in Normal this weekend will be East Alton-Wood River senior Drew Sobol. Sobol qualified for state by shooting an 82 at the Mattoon Sectional. It's the first time Sobol has advanced to state as an individual in his prep career.
CLASS AA SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN SECTIONAL — Edwardsville senior Kayla Weinacht earned a trip to the Class AA state tournament this weekend at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur after firing an 87 at the Class AA Sacred Heart-Griffin Sectional on Tuesday at Illini Country Club in Springfield.
Weinacht will be the Tigers’ lone representative at the state tournament, which starts on Friday. Edwardsville came up two places short of a state berth, finishing fifth with a 359.
Also for Edwardsville, Addasyn Zeller shot an 87, but lost in a five-player playoff that determined the final four spots for the state tournament. Sydney Sahuri shot a 90, Paige Hamel and Jessica Beson each had a 95 and Carlie Van Patten finished with a 109.
Alton’s Morgan Bemis shot a 90 and Granite City’s Megan Keel finished with a 107.
Galesburg, O’Fallon and Normal Community finished in the top three and Kirsten Osborn of Galesburg was the medalist with a 78.
EA-WR 2, METRO EAST LUTHERAN 1 — The Oilers advanced to the Class 1A regional championship match for the third year in a row with a win over the Knights on Tuesday in the Class 1A Greenville Regional semifinals.
Zach Lafferty and Jake Erslon scored goals, Devin Curtis and Luke Sims each had an assist and goalie D.J. Redden had four saves for EA-WR, which also beat MELHS in regional tournament play for the second straight year.
The Oilers improved to 12-9 and will play Althoff at 4 p.m. Friday in the championship match. Althoff beat Greenville 4-1 on Tuesday to advance to the finals. It's the second straight season EA-WR and the Crusaders have met in the regional finals.
MELHS ended its season at 7-10-1. The Knights lost to the Oilers 2-1 in the last meeting on Sept. 13 at Wood River Soccer Park.
Kedric Norwood scored the Knights' lone goal on Tuesday.
EA-WR is looking for the second regional crown in school history. The Oilers won the 1A MELHS Regional with a 1-0 victory over Greenville in 2014.
EDWARDSVILLE 2, BELLEVILLE WEST 1 — Bayne Noll and Mohammad Hamad scored goals to lift the Tigers to a Southwestern Conference win over the Maroons on Tuesday in Belleville.
Edwardsville finished its regular season at 13-1-5 and will return to action at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 against either Granite City or Pekin in the Class 3A Granite City Regional semifinal match.
The Tigers also wrapped up their conference season at 4-0-2. They need a Collinsville tie or loss to Alton on Thursday to win the league for the third time in four years.
MARQUETTE 3. COLUMBIA 0 — Aaron Bulch, Riley Velloff and Zach Weinman scored goals to lead the Explorers to the win over the Eagles on Tuesday.
Weinman had an assist and Chris Hartrich had two assists for Marquette, which improved to 11-5-2 and will close out its regular season at 6 p.m. Thursday against Hazelwood West at Gordon Moore Park.
EDWARDSVILLE DEF. VILLA DUCHESNE 15-25, 25-23, 25-16 — Rachel Pranger had 12 kills and six serving points, Kate Martin finished with 14 kills, Rachel Verdun had 28 assists and nine service points and Megan Woll had eight service points to lead the Tigers to a three-game win over the Saints on Tuesday in St. Louis.
The Tigers also helped coach Jami Parker pick up her 400th career win.
Edwardsville improved to 22-4 with three regular season matches remaining. The Tigers play a home match against Alton at 6 p.m. Thursday.
O’FALLON DEF. ALTON 25-14, 25-14 — The Redbirds dropped to 14-17-1 overall and 0-5 in Southwestern Conference play with a two-game loss to the Panthers in their regular season home finale on Tuesday.
Sydney Schmidt had 11 assists and Savannah Fisher finished with six kills for Alton, which will play at Edwardsville at 6 p.m. Thursday.
GIBAULT DEF. MARQUETTE 16-25, 25-15, 25-17 — The Hawks spoiled the Explorers’ senior night on Tuesday with a come-from-behind, three-game victory.
Laura Hamilton had 12 digs, Michelle Cameron finished with five kills and five blocks, Karoline Lauritzen had four kills without a hitting error, Lauren Heinz had 10 serving points and three aces and Marissa Nosco had 16 assists, five blocks and three aces for Marquette, which dropped to 10-15 and will play a road match at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Nokomis.
GREENVILLE DEF. METRO EAST LUTHERAN 25-14, 25-17 – The Knights dropped to 8-18 with a two-game loss to the Comets on Tuesday at home.
MELHS, which has lost its last three matches, plays a road match against Mount Olive at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18.
SOUTHWESTERN DEF. EA-WR 26-28, 25-18, 25-20 — Morgan Moxey had five kills with 11 service points and eight assists, Becca Nottke had 10 assists with six service points and two aces and Kayla Aligholi had six kills with four service points and two aces for the Oilers, who dropped to 5-18.
EA-WR will play Bunker Hill at 6 p.m. Thursday in its final home match.
CARLINVILLE INVITATIONAL — Marquette Catholic freshman Riley Vickrey turned in another solid performance on Tuesday, placing 12th with a 19:42 in the Carlinville Invitational on Tuesday.
Three days before, Vickrey won the freshman division of the East Alton-Wood River Invitational at Belk Park. She also won the Alton Invitational and placed second in the small-school girls’ division of the Madison County meet.
Roxana finished fourth with 152 points in the boys’ race and placed seventh with 192 points in the girls division. Brandon Isom placed 21st with a 16:58, Dakota Stumpf was 25th with a 17:10, Cree Stumpf finished 35th with a 17:35 and James Henseler was 40th with a 17:52 in the boys’ race. Michaela Tarpley finished 35th with a 21:10 in the girls’ race.
EA-WR’s Jake Roustio placed 27th with a 17:12, Metro East Lutheran’s Javon Watkins finished 28th with a 17:14 and Father McGivney’s Daniel Jones was 53rd with an 18:35 in the boys’ race.
GREENVILLE 8, CIVIC MEMORIAL 1 — The Eagles ended their dual-match season at 6-13 with a loss to the Comets on Tuesday.
CM will compete in the Class A Triad Sectional on Friday and Saturday.
ST. JOSEPH’S ACADEMY 4, EDWARDSVILLE 3 — The Tigers dropped to 11-8-1 with a loss to the Angels on Tuesday in St. Louis.
Veronica Carrow scored two goals, Olivia Fink scored a goal and goalie Sarah Blume finished with 15 saves for Edwardsville, which will play at 4 p.m. Thursday against Cor Jesu on the road.
