ALTON – It proved to be a successful start for the Metro East Bears in Senior Legion baseball the past weekend.
The Bears defeated visiting Festus, Mo., 9-3 on Friday and then downed Eureka, Mo., 4-1, on Sunday in a nonleague game at Gordon Moore Park. Metro East is scheduled to play Tuesday at Jerseyville in a nine-inning game. The Bears also play Wednesday at Festus and Thursday at East St. Louis before traveling to Greenville for a tournament this weekend. They will also welcome Ballwin, Mo. (June 15) and Fairview Heights (June 17) in upcoming games.
Jacob St. Peters logged the victory against Festus and Chris Robinson picked up the win over Eureka. Connor Melton and Matthew Zielonko both had two hits for the Bears against Eureka. Drake Hampton contributed a triple and Jacob Skrabacz added a double.
Metro East is one of five teams cast in District 22 competition. Highland, Belleville, Fairview Heights and East St. Louis round out the league, which no longer has North-South divisions. The Bears will play host to the Great Lakes Regional on Aug. 5-9 at Lloyd Hopkins Field inside Moore Park. The regional will feature teams from Illinois (2), Wisconsin (2), Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
The Bears are officially registered nationally as Edwardsville Post 199/Alton Post 126, general manager Dennis Sharp said.
