On Thursday night the Metro East Lutheran school board approved to co-op with Madison High School in football and cross country.
The Knights, members of the Prairie State Conference, had to forfeit five of their nine games in 2014, including contests against Greater Alton area schools Marquette Catholic and East Alton-Wood River. The move should remedy the lack of numbers MELHS, located in Edwardsville, faced and end those forfeits in 2015.
"The influx of a number of student-athletes from Madison will give the co-op team sufficient athletes to compete in the Prairie State conference, whose member schools approved the co-op agreement last month," Metro's director of athletics Dave Redden said in an email on Friday.
Madison's school board approved the co-op last week.
