NASHVILLE, Tenn. — SIUE men’s basketball was chosen to finish third in the Ohio Valley Conference’s West Division in a poll of OVC basketball coaches and sports information personnel.
The poll was released Tuesday at the OVC’s annual Media Day.
SIUE picked up 77 points, finishing behind only Murray State, which received 132 points and 22 first-place votes, and Southeast Missouri, which received 109 points and two first-place votes. The Cougars were followed in the poll by Austin Peay (70), Eastern Illinois (64) and UT Martin (40).
In the East Division, Belmont grabbed 125 points and 16 first-place votes as the preseason favorite. Morehead State (104) just edged last year’s tournament champion, Eastern Kentucky (103). Both schools received four first-place votes. Tennessee Tech (71) was picked fourth with Jacksonville State (52) and Tennessee State (40) picked fifth and sixth respectively.
Also announced Tuesday was the OVC Preseason All-Conference Team. Murray State’s Cameron Payne was selected as the preseason Player of the Year. SIUE did not have a representative on the preseason team.
