The Metro East Bears saw their seven-game overall winning streak and six-game playoff victory run snapped Wednesday at the American Legion Senior state tournament in Wheaton.
The Bears stumbled in a 10-3 loss to Mattoon Post 88, dropping them into the loser's bracket where they are set to play host Wheaton at noon today.
Metro East dipped to 24-7 with the loss and were outhit 19-4 by Mattoon, while also committing a pair of errors in the loss.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead behind a Caleb Buhs RBI triple in the second inning, but Mattoon responded with four runs in the third to nab a 4-1 lead and never looked back.
Jacob St. Peters suffered the loss on the mound. St. Peters threw 4.1 innings, scattering 10 hits, fanning three, walking no one and allowing six runs, all earned.
Offensively no one on the Bears produced a multi-hit game. Drake Hampton had a double and two RBIs, while Connor Melton and Nick Paulda each had hits to complement Buhs.
